Yup. The problem is that once you try and do something future despots always use the resentment to prop themselves up.
Hugo Chavez got a whole lot of mileage out of blaming “The Yanquis” when things started to go south for him. The hard feelings were so ingrained in that society that the people always bought that.
My Honduran contact tells me Chavistas all over Latin America, including in his country, are *still* getting mileage out of blaming the Yanquis. They’re using that with some success to gin up anti-US/anti-government riots on regular bases in his land.
