A Tough Outlook for Virginia Republicans as November Approaches
National Review ^ | October 28, 2019 | Jim Geraghty

Posted on 10/29/2019 6:51:28 AM PDT by C19fan

Virginia holds state-legislative elections this year, and the outlook is cloudy for the state GOP, despite this year’s earlier scandals of Governor Ralph “Blackface” Northam, allegations of sexual assault against Lieutenant Governor Justin Fairfax, and another blackface scandal involving Mark Herring, the state’s attorney general. If Virginia Republicans have a lousy year, many outside the state will wonder how they could fail to capitalize on the series of scandals. But the state party has been sailing into headwinds throughout the cycle.

On November 5, Virginians will vote in elections for all 40 seats in the state senate and all 100 seats in the state house of delegates. In both chambers, Republicans are holding onto a razor-thin majority: 21 to 19 in the senate, and 51 to 49 in the state house. Republicans entered the 2017 election cycle with comfortable majorities and saw them nearly disappear, driven by huge turnout among Democrats in the first full year of Donald Trump’s presidency. That dynamic, furiously motivating progressive voters in northern Virginia’s Washington D.C. suburbs, has barely abated during Trump’s presidency.

I happen to live in state legislative districts that the Democrats and their allies are bombarding with ads in all media channels. I get in via phone calls, mailings, tv, and on YouTube. The Left are pushing hard for gun control. This might be the election where Virginia becomes Virginfornia.

Sad for you; sad for us, but a Virginia Republican is no longer a viable political option in the state.

Meanwhile former Virginia colony Kentucky is about to re-elect full-throated Trumper Gov. Bevin.

If VA is truly lost then form a 51st state out of DC , NoVA and a piece of Maryland. We would get back +2 Senators and a whole GOP state out of the deal.

South New Jersey

We are running this election on maps drawn by a professor from Univ. of CA at Irvine at the direction of a Democrat judge.

Not looking good.

Virginia is becoming the place where the sewage of DC is being spread. Either the Republicans show a spine and attack liberal corruption or the garbage will continue to pile up.

This is just another reminder that the GOP is destined to become a regional party only. It will not go the way of the Whigs. But it eventually will no longer be a viable national party.

And I blame the GOP elites for this. Today’s Democrats are ruthless. But instead of fighting fire with fire, the GOPe are busy planning the next event at the country club.

Simple fox for VA. Get rid of the government workers. How? Move all the government agencies out of DC to the hinterlands.

The GOP has the votes to hold contriol of the Virginia legislature....they just have to come out and vote...period!!! One the GOP has tons of cash...get with it GOP and spend that cash wisely across the entire state...but, center on the areas it will do the most good. and get out that GOP vote on election Day...period.

But...most of all, Virginia needs a massive POTUS, Trump rally, just before the election occurs...this is an absolute must!!! Trump can get the vote out...period!!! Even if the GOP loses...it is worth the maximum effort. Trump, Cruz, Pence, RNC, etc., Diamond & Pearl, etc. get them butts in gear and make things happen...100% It’s GOP vote turnout we need!!!

Its NOVA. At some point Democrats will take over the legislature. Demographics is destiny.

When did they last have good candidates? The last several and many election cycles have been losers. (I lived in northern Virginia for 19 years.)

Actually, NR is run by a different set of “lesser sons” than Bill Kristol, e.g. Jonah Goldberg, E. Garrett Bewkes IV

The outlook is grim.

Here is what a democrat legislature will mean for hard working, tax paying and law abiding Virginians:

Tax hikes of all kinds.

Restrictions on gun sales of all kinds.

Left-wing judges who will not follow the law (just like O’Bama/Clinton federal judges).

Laws that remove loss of civil rights for convicted felons.

Live birth abortions made legal.

Repeal of abortion clinic safety laws.

Legalization of marijuana.

Repeal of tough juvenile justice laws.

Repeal of the abolition of parole.

Repeal of truth in sentencing.

Repeal of car tax relief.

Repeal of the presumption of against granting bail for persons facing charges of violence and for illegal aliens.

Few dems are running on this agenda but they all favor it. It is a stealth campaign. Virginians would never knowingly vote for this destructive and high crime agenda. But vote for it they will.

I live in NOVA, and was encouraged by an ad for a Loudoun County Republican that had statements by the Lt. Gov’s rape victims. That nicely countered his opponent’s hysterical anti-gun, anti-Trump ads.

However, in my district in Fairfax, the Pubbies couldn’t even find anyone to run for several posts, including State’s Attorney. The Dims are running one of their Soros Social Justice guys unopposed.

NOVA could very well be lost, and it will drag down the rest of the state.
