NGHE AN: A photo of her missing daughter Bui Thi Nhung, an offering of fruit and a bouquet of flowers - a makeshift shrine laid by a desperate mother in a remote Vietnamese town many fear was home to some of the 39 people found dead in a truck in Britain.

More than 20 Vietnamese are feared to be among the bodies found in a refrigerated trailer in an industrial park in Essex east of London on Wednesday (Oct 23).

It is indeed very sad. I think governments, including my own British government, could do more in the source contries to discourage people from attempting such journeys. The people who organise the movement are simply criminals with no care for the illegal immigrants many of whom will be forced into slave-labour and/or sex-slavery in the destination countries. Charities admit that slavery is thriving in modern-day Britain.
But of course, the elites are happy with all this (provided not too many die on route).

Dead by asphyxia?

Having worked several years of my youth in warehouse freezers, freezing to death would be much more uncomfortable and much more frightening.

All the reports said these were Chinese people. Now we learn that they are Vietnamese.

Law enforcement authorities provided bad information to the press.

Re: paying smugglers tens of thousands of dollars to get to the UK

I have never understood this “smuggler” strategy.

The only thing people in foreign countries need to do to get into Europe or the USA is to get a passport and a tourist visa, buy the cheapest round trip plane ticket available, carry two weeks of money, and then just overstay your visa.

That’s $3,000 tops - much less if you can make up some verifiable story about staying with friends, family, or old classmates.

Instead, they agree to pay $10,000 to a smuggler, which means prostitution or slave labor, which EVERY adult in the world already knows about or suspects.

The smugglers may promise them jobs waiting in a welcoming community of their compatriots. “I will get you a job in a Vietnamese restaurant in London, with an apartment overhead with hot and cold running water and 24 hour-a-day electricity.” (Arizona may be seeing truckloads of refugees from the independent Republic of California in our distopian future.)

Maybe this should act as a warning that people should not illegally sneak into other countries. Of course, the dumb people of the world can not comprehend death as an outcome of their stupid decisions which is why stupid people die more often than intelligent people. Stupid people also vote democrat much more often than intelligent people.

Yes, it is very sad, whether the people were Vietnamese, Chinese, Chinese from Vietnam, or a combination of these and others. It’s just sad for everyone.

Before the Internet, that may have been all they needed.

Today - it’s impossible NOT to know what’s waiting for you when you get there.

Swedish professor and economist Hans Rosling estimates that out of nine billion souls on God’s green earth seven billion do not have access to washing machines. The number of people without internet access is probably a large majority of the earth’s population, most of those without access are probably functionally illiterate. But they more than willing to wash dishes for access to hot and cold running water.

In remote villages of Vietnam, there may not be internet access let alone televisions or computers

They come to steal jobs and spread corruption. Their families sent them here.

This is a good story to send home to their people.

“Many embark on treacherous journeys overland via Russia or China, risking their lives and paying smugglers tens of thousands of dollars to get to the UK, often carrying falsified documents.”

Lawbreakers. Do it the legally...have a better chance of surviving the journey.

Anyway, driver has been charged with murder (maybe manslaughter).

Despite how many people we see overstaying visas in the US, you’d be shocked at the number of people who are not granted a Tourist visa.

I must admit that many who get Tourist Visas and are stopped for questioning make a mistake of bringing their cells phones with them. Before they arrive they should have purchased new cell phones so there is no history to browse through.

Though I say that, I’m happy if they get caught and turned back because of information on their cell phones.

It’s all a bloody mess, isn’t it?

I do have a dog in this hunt as my son will probably go to the PI (with my blessing) to marry a beautiful and well educated young woman. She’s been vetted by his father’s side of the family; a vetting, I’m sure is much better than what our government would do with the folks coming into this country from other nations.

It appears they were carrying Chinese passports, since found to be fakes. The Vietnamese connection only became apparent after relatives in Vietnam started to report distressed phone calls, now assumed to have come from within the truck.
