The Trump administration plans to end subscriptions to The Washington Post and the New York Times held by federal agencies, the latest sign of presidential displeasure with news coverage he deems unfair.
White House press secretary Stephanie Grisham told the Wall Street Journal that the White House would instruct agencies not to renew their subscriptions to the papers when they come up.
She characterized the decision as a cost-saving measure, telling the Journal that hundreds of thousands of taxpayer dollars will be saved by the cancellations.
Trump has made no secret of his dislike for both newspapers, dubbing the Times the failing New York Times and The Post the Amazon Washington Post in his frequent broadsides against the two news organizations.
Neither description is accurate: The Timess parent company, the New York Times Co., is highly profitable and its subscription base has been growing smartly, particularly since Trump took office. The Post is owned by Amazon founder and chief executive Jeff Bezos but is otherwise unaffiliated with Amazon itself.***
Trump turned his animus toward the Times and Post up a notch in an interview with Fox News host Sean Hannity on Monday, saying, We dont even want [the Times] in the White House anymore. Were going to probably terminate that and The Washington Post. Theyre fake.
The White House has already canceled its subscriptions to the papers, according to several accounts.

NYT highly profitable?
Lmao. Isnt that to the tune of journalists getting fired and Facebook sponsoring them?
Give me a break
Not at airports and doctor offices and hospital ER rooms.
Not in pizzerias, diners and bars.
Not in the living room, not in the dining room, not in the bedroom.
Not anywhere.
Why have we been feeding this rabid dog
Better late than never!
I have long suspected that the Washington Post gets the vast majority of its subscription revenue from federal agencies. I think some LARGE digital subscriptions will turn up, giving full access to the rag to all employees of a department or division.
In the world of trade magazines that focus mainly on a single company, that company often buys a “blanket” subscription that essentially funds the whole magazine. The Washington Post is the trade rag for the federal bureaucracy, and their behavior strongly suggests a similar financial arrangement.
If the administration sticks to their guns on this, I think it will finish off the Post.
Publish their budgets. I wanna see what else (of our hard-earned taxpayer monies) they’ve been wasting.
Excellent!!!!! Way to go President Trump!
LOL... I know you jest, but the few times I actually have watched Al-Jazeera, they're muzzy and weird but in all honesty a much better news operation than CNN.
Why not just tell the truth and say the decision is because the Times and the Post are fake news? Why lie about it?
Actually they are. Link
Profitable does not mean expanding and growing.
No, but increasing subscriptions does.
Another nice way of saying the print version is going away.
Which is true of just about every newspaper out there.
Excellent, who can argue with saving money?
Oh.....democrats.
