Romney lost the election the day he picked Paul Ryan over Chris Christie for VP. Romney thought Christie would outshine him on the campaign trail.

Knowing what we know now, I don't think that is true. It's better to have a known enemy leading the country than a false friend. Romney is and was every bit as bad as Obama--he is simply dishonest about it.
