Troops roamed the streets of Santiago, Chile after long protests turned violent Saturday, resulting in more than 150 injured police officers and more than 300 arrests.
Chilean President Sebastián Piñera declared a state of emergency in the capital Friday night in an effort to limit the demonstrations across the city as protesters clashed with police officers and law enforcement launched tear gas.
The protests began Friday night as part of a campaign by young people to protest the second fare increase on the citys metro this. The fare increase began earlier this month and immediately sparked outrage throughout the country, as the cost of living for poor and middle class Chileans has continued to rise.
But as the number of demonstrators grew, protesters spilled into the street and set fire to subway stations, banks, buses cars, and the headquarters of the countrys largest electricity provider, Enel.
People also looted pharmacies, supermarkets and other stores. The protests spread to at least four other cities in Chile and are expected to continue Saturday night, despite the state of emergency that limits how people may move and assemble freely.
Chile's current state gives the army authority over internal security, according to the Times, which is why troops were spread out across the streets of Santiago Saturday.

Maybe give them room to destroy?
In the United States, we just write songs about fare increases...

I gotta tell you something. Augusto Pinochet was my hero. This was after Pat Buchanan said that those who were killed SHOUDA been killed. McGlocklin Group. I was shocked. Their new President Pinera is the brother of the fella who designed their new pension system. It’s a good model to REPLACE SSI. If the left is rioting over a 6% raise in muni fees over the last year it’s a reflection on the PEOPLE. Somebody’s gotta be the bad guy. A teachable moment.
“This was after Pat Buchanan said that those who were killed SHOUDA been killed. McGlocklin Group. I was shocked.”
A lot of people were going to die regardless of how things progressed in 1973. Thankfully the Communists, for once, paid the price for their near ‘revolution’.
Does that mean Pinera has to do it again? Chile has the best economy in South America unless I’m wrong.
And I always thought Chile was one of the more sane Latin American countries.
How horrible.
Any excuse to have a riot.
Yeah. For some reason if conservatives die, it is righteous, but if leftists die, it is unacceptable. The truth is, of course, that Communists are the cause of more death, misery and poverty outside of the world of Islam.
I am guessing that this is not about the fare increases. This smells like communists stirring up trouble.
I have a picure of him on my screen of one of my perso al laptops
“Does that mean Pinera has to do it again?”
It does seem that a new generation is again ready for Jihad.
Ben Franklin was correct when he wrote;
I am for doing good to the poor, but I differ in opinion of the means. I think the best way of doing good to the poor, is not making them easy in poverty, but leading or driving them out of it. In my youth I travelled much, and I observed in different countries, that the more public provisions were made for the poor, the less they provided for themselves, and of course became poorer. And, on the contrary, the less was done for them, the more they did for themselves, and became richer.
Probably right.
I remember the "spontaneous" protests in the 80's where 90% of the electrical grid would go down in about 5 minutes.
Pinochet very great man amazing how easy it is to turn a place into a shithole

Pinera is a free market hero. It’s no coincidence that Chile has the best economy in South America. Pinera is the one who designed their social security system to be completely private. People’s accounts are OWNED by the people. The government cannot touch them. Hence they have the best retirement system in the world as the gains from the stock market have fattened the people’s retirement accounts.
The Left has been losing elections, they had to act. Riots are their way of showing their legitimacy.
