As lawmakers huddled inside the House of Commons on Saturday to debate Prime Minister Boris Johnsons Brexit deal, hundreds of thousands of protesters gathered outside the Palace of Westminster to demand that voters be given the final say on Brexit.
Organizers said they hoped to draw more than a million protesters*, which would make it one of the largest demonstrations in British history. (*they didn't)
The stated desire of the marchers was to call for a second referendum on any Brexit deal that lawmakers approve, but most had a more basic goal.
No Brexit was the chant that echoed through the stately streets and grand avenues of the city on a crisp and sunny autumn afternoon.
This is a last-ditch attempt to get them to hear our voices, said Ollie Lloyd, 42, who was among those protesting. The debate taking place in Parliament, he said, was about more than trade deals and plain economics.
This is about what kind of country we want to be, he said: Do we want to be an open and tolerant country, or one that is closed off and inward looking?
His father, Gil Lloyd, 68, was handing out anti-Brexit stickers at the march.
Wearing a European Union sweatshirt and wristbands, and a button depicting a man meant to represent Britain shooting himself in the foot, he said it was important to participate in the demonstration even if he was not hopeful that a second referendum would take place.
I am just horrified at the whole thing, he said.
Those mixed emotions seemed to capture the spirit of the day a combination of defiance, determination, exhaustion and resignation.

The amendment says that the House of Commons withholds its approval of the Brexit deal unless and until implementing legislation is passed.
The amendment passed by a vote of 322 to 306. It was proposed by Oliver Letwin, a member of parliament who was kicked out of Johnson's Conservative Party last month for backing a law to prevent a no-deal Brexit.
MPs have decided by 322 votes to 306 to amend the Governments approval motion.
These protestors wand unelected EU’ers to regulate their lives? What idiots.
At least the protesters have a paid gig...

As usual, the Left is better at turning out its crazies to back the ever larger state than Conservatives. Conservatives should have surrounded Parliament and made it clear that the MPs must implement the vote to leave or else.
If the NYT describes a leftist crowd as “hundreds of thousands,” I say let’s count.
Ahh, yes. Leftists want to keep voting until they get the desired results and only then can voting stop...
Brexiters have bills to pay and jobs to go to.
Same sh!t, different hemisphere.
It will happen with or without implementing legislation.
UK is out by the 31. The Remoaners bag of parliamentary tricks wont change the outcome.
They can keep on pounding the table while theyre at it.
Yes. I have suggested many times on this site that Conservatives rally on the Mall for one issue or another, but all I hear is “we’re Conservatives and we don’t do that” BS.
You mean like Nigel Farage who is part of the EU parliament that accepts or rejects EU proposed regulations proposed by the commission?
Or you mean Boris, who as the leader of one of the EU countries has veto rights over regulations?
Both the parliament and the leaders of the countries are elected and these are the decision makers.
Yet Nigel Farage wants the deal to be rejected.
And the pro leave DUP northern Ireland party voted against the deal.
The DUP I can understand — they are a one-trick pony.
Farage is more complicated — I fear that his issue is that once Brexit happens, he no longer has any importance and isn’t a potential kingmaker anymore. He has been signaling for months that no matter what Boris did (other than a “no-deal” Brexit that would have no chance of getting past parliament), he would oppose it.
He didn’t even need to see this agreement — he had decided to oppose it long ago.
I didn’t want to believe it when people said it about him in the past, but it really is all about him.
It has always been only about him.
