Former Defense secretary James Mattis responded to the President Trump calling him “the world’s most overrated general” during a meeting with Congressional leaders Wednesday.
“I’m not just an overrated general. I’m the greatest, the world’s most overrated," Mattis told the audience at the Al Smith Memorial Foundation dinner Thursday. Mattis was the keynote speaker at the 74th annual event.
"I'm honored to be considered that by Donald Trump because he also called Meryl Streep an overrated actress. So I guess I'm the Meryl Streep of generals, and frankly that sounds pretty good to me,” Mattis continued.
But Mattis didn’t stop there with his jabs at the president.
“And you do have to admit that between me and Meryl, at least we’ve had some victories,” he joked.

I kind of liked him at one time, but any general who does not recognize the severity of trouble this nation faces to remain a free nation is, well worthless. He is totally worthless.

I think his comments ought to be taken in context of the venue in which they were offered. In other words, he was joking.
I have zero grief with Mattis. He showed class when he left the administration on principle, and he did it the right way. He wrote a book, got it published, went on the obligatory book tour and, despite all the people wanting him to say bad things about Trump, he didn’t.
As far as I’m concerned, he’s a class act.
