Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) defended President Trump's decision to withdraw troops from Syria, saying that the Kurds would be better off aligned with Syrian leader Bashar Assad.
The Kurds are going to better aligned with Assad because they frankly need a Syrian sponsor, Paul, told Hill.TV during an interview that aired on Thursday.
Paul, seen as an outsider among Republicans on foreign policy, has been a staunch defender of Trump's decision to pullout from Syria.
Paul said the U.S. never intended to stay in Syria in the first place.
We were never staying there the president never promised to stay there, he said were going to wipe out ISIS, we did, he said.

We should of never been there in the 1st place. Syria been a Russian client state since the 1950s. I remember watching appalled in 2015 as both Democrat, and Republican, Swamp Things tried to out macho each other about going to war with Russia over Syria.
The Military Industrial Nazis aren’t going to like this!
All true.
Remember that the Kurds live in Syria, Iraq and Iran and Turkey. About 35-40 million total, about the same as the population of Canada.
Kurds are 20% of the population of Turkey.
Kurds are 15-20% of the population of Iraq.
Kurds are 10% of the population of Syria.
Kurds are ~9% of the population of Iran.
Until everyone involved works to settle their own differences and negotiate their own terms for peace and property a US 'peace keeping' force kept a lid on a simmering pressure cooker.
Maybe there's a role for US diplomats to broker a mutually agreeable treaty for peace and territory but artificially imposing 'peace' with a US presence would never lead to a long-term solution.
The Cold War is over. Let the Russians die fighting the Turks.
Actually, the Turks will preen. The Russians and Syrians will stabilize the Kurdish area. And this whole thing will be over as it should be. Few people will die.
As far as middle-east dictators go, Assad is somewhat benevolent to minorities under his wing.
I will admit, I was upset when I first heard of the U.S. withdrawal. Then I wondered why. It was the same feeling when you see some P.C. affront on the news. You are conditioned to feel that way by modern society. It doesn’t necessarily align with right and wrong, and when you logically think it out, the opposite is often true. That is how far the Marxist tentacles have gotten into our society.
I believe Trump made the right call. When the region settles into further stability, the story will be dropped and ignored.
I also had the same reaction. I don’t like the US making promises it doesn’t follow through on - but any people group that believes that promises will last through administrations, or even one administration, is naïve.
Trump made the right call.
I WOULD like to see the US and Russia working together in the ME rather than see increased Russian influence in the area.
We need to get out of NATO now.
A+ for Rand Paul.
Let’s not forget about Incirlik.
Hopefully so, to put this in context. A mass shooting here in Chicago this weekend, in addition to other shootings. And multiple mass shooting in Philadelphia also this past weekend. As they still scream about a Kurdish Genocide
A great many Kurds reside in semi-autonomous Iraqi Kurdistan, which has been doing quite well since Saddam was deposed Baghdad.
