A rift over the Des Moines Registers handling of the Carson King story has led to the resignation of the entire staff of the Registers Annual Great Bike Ride Across Iowa from the newspaper, effective immediately.
In a Tuesday post on RAGBRAIs Facebook page, TJ Juskiewicz said the Register, refused to offer me the opportunity to openly speak to the RAGBRAI Nation, and answer the hundreds of passionate questions asked about the future of RAGBRAI following the Des Moines Registers handling of the Carson King story.
Juskiewicz said his efforts to communicate with riders were blocked because it did not mesh with the companys PR narrative to spin the Carson King embarrassment.
Juskiewicz says he was told the Registers leadership, and public relations professionals dont want to issue any more public statements on this matter.
But, Juskiewicz said the Register offered him talking points for interviews regarding RAGBRAI if the Carson King situation comes up.
So, 16-years after taking the job as RAGBRAIs executive director, Juskiewicz, and his staff resigned.

One of my very few far left buddies lives there and even she’s furious with that rag.
I’m confused.
I don’t understand the jump from Carson King to this bike race.
Maybe - he might be more upset that they fired the reporter rather than smeared Carson King.
The people who run the race were given talking points that supported the left-wing commie newspaper’s PR objectives to ignore the King affair and rather than being told what to say, they quit. And the beauty of it is, they can start their own race and flip the newspaper the bird.
Thanks
Whos Carson King?
The bike tour was started and sponsored by the filthy Communist Des Moines Register. The Register launched the perverted character assassination attack on a college football fan raising money for a childrens hospital.
Only human filth would be connected to the Register, like Mitt Romney who was endorsed by the Register in 2012.
Donald Kaul (a RAGBRAI founder) is turning over in his grave.
The Ride stopped at my folks vacant lot (1/2 acre) years back. Filled it with tents and the riders enjoyed the water hose for make do showers.
Next morning they were all gone and the lot clean as if they were never there.
anyone care to give a very brief summary of the king thing?
Agreed. No clue as to what all this means.
Typical “newspaper” doesn’t explain a thing.
From this article:
“The split between RAGBRAIs leadership team, and the Des Moines Register, grew out of the newspapers coverage of the King story.
King is the Iowa State fan who raised more $3-million for the University of Iowas Stead Childrens Hospital off of a sign asking for beer money before this years Iowa-Iowa State football game.
Doing a profile story on King, a Des Moines Register reporter dug up some 8-year-old social media posts, from King, that were offensive.
Anheuser-Busch, the maker of the beer King wanted to buy, announced it had cut all ties with King, but still agreed to honor its donation to the childrens hospital.
King apologized for the tweets that were quoting the comedy show Tosh.O.”
What they left out of this article is that the DM Register backed their reporter in digging up “dirt” on King. Then, the tables were turned when it came out that the reporter had worse stuff in his online postings. The Register said he resigned, but everyone knows he got fired, and the Register stopped attacking this guy, and Busch backtracked and said that they weren’t really reneging on their deal to match donations, but they just weren’t going to give him a year’s supply of beer.
Donations went way up after the Register attack, and the guy gave a $3 million check to Children’s Hospital last weekend.
do you subscribe to the washington post? Cause it appears i can’t look at your link without a paid subscription.
Once again, everything the left touches turns to chit.
No I don’t.. don’t know why it asked you to pay...
Basically the gentleman Carson King held up a sign at a football game or something jokingly asking for donations to replenish his beer supply.. it got on TV and folks donated to him.. He gave the money to a children’s hospital or something... and Anheiser Bush and some other folks matched his donation..
Well then a reporter with this rag decided to delve into his past, and found 2 tweets he had posted when he was 16, or something that they claimed were racist... and then Anheiser Busch and some other sponsor pulled out etc...
So, that’s the gist of the story... The Paper is catching hell for character assassinating the guy over a few tweets he made as a teenager.
oh yeah thank you i remember hearing about that now.
Three-time RAGBRAI-er here. The staff is always awesome there.
