I haven’t heard that term used in over 40 years... but it’s a real ....

“Coupon clipping refers back to a time when these fixed-income securities came printed with coupons on them. To receive the interest payments, the bondholder would clip off each coupon as its payment came due and redeem it for cash.”

Clipping coupons. Yes, it was a dated expression like the record player Biden also used. Decorative executive desk sets often silver plated used to come with four items: fountain pen(s) on a mounted pedestal, a pair of very long pointed scissors for clipping, a letter opener in a scabbard and a small index card or scratch paper holder often with one’s initials. None of these items have been in office use since the dial telephone, mimeograph and the Dictaphone.

Poor Biden is stuck in the pre-desktop computer age. Meanwhile President Trump tweets which I’d bet is beyond poor Joe’s capability.

I had a grandmother who clipped _bond_ coupons—but she died more than twenty years ago—at the age of eighty five!

The term, when current, was also a pejorative for the idle rich upper class who derived their income from investments that were usually made with inherited money. As you reported, their “effort” at “working” consisted exclusively of clipping payment coupons off of the certificate and sending them in for payment.

Can confirm - clipping coupons is, or rather was - a real thing. At least in the Bond market.

Wow your explaination makes this way worse. If Joe is referring to something from 40 years ago like it’s current that is really really bad.

I have heard the expression on financial radio shows within the last few years. If individual bond income comes up, they use the term, even though it isn’t literally applicable.
