Atatiana Jefferson pointed gun at window before Fort Worth officer killed her, nephew said

A murder warrant for Aaron Dean, the Fort Worth officer who killed Atatiana Jefferson, tells what led up to the shooting from the perspective of her 8-year-old nephew, who was in the room with her when she was shot.

The boy told a forensic interviewer that he and his aunt were playing video games together about 2:30 a.m. Saturday when she heard noises outside. She took her handgun from her purse and pointed it “toward the window” before she was shot, the nephew said, according to the arrest-warrant affidavit.

The 8-year-old saw his aunt fall to the ground. Jefferson, 28, was pronounced dead at 3:05 a.m.

Interim Police Chief Ed Kraus said at a news conference Tuesday that it “makes sense that she would have a gun if she felt that she was being threatened or there was someone in the backyard.”

Yep, Ironically and maybe it’s just me being paranoid, but often when I see soemthign unusual late at night I arm myself, normally in an up and ready position as I check things out.

The door was open, but she had a security screen door that was shut. I do that all the time when it cools down in the evening. So do I deserve to be shot in my own home because I leave my door open all night? This dipshit could’ve knocked on the door, announced who he was and why he was there instead of snooping around in the dark. Had he done his damn job correctly this woman wouldn’t be dead. Quit making excuses for these incompetent clowns. He murdered a woman in her own home. End of story.

I read that the chief told him to resign or he was going to fire him. Apparently I guess that means the chief thought it would look better on his record that way. Sickos.

If the neighbor who called knew the victim had a gun...

I wonder if the neighbor had any animus toward the vic?

“”See a gun, shoot”.
“See a cell phone, shoot”.
“A dog barks, shoot”.

There needs to be something more to police training.”

Responding to a call of an open door - possible burglary or home invasion. Move up in the dark and someone points a gun in your direction......I guess you would have him run. Always blame the cop first mentality. Were you in the Obama administration?

“The cop never announced his presence as a LEO, can’t blame the gal.”

1. How much time did he have?
2. Announce yourself and become a target.

Not the woman’s fault and not the cops fault. Tragic circumstance.

Unless the shooter articulated that he saw a gun being pointed at him prior to shooting the woman, he has no defense or excuse.

The trespassing intruder had no excuse even IF he saw the lawfully armed homeowners self defense weapon. His funny blue costume is not a license to commit murder.

As a terrible grandfather, who lets the grandkids (4 & 8 yrs) stay up to anywhere from 12 midnight till they fall a sleep. I have no idea what an 8 yr old is doing up at the time. /s

Sick to death of blame cops first, second guessing crapola.
How about the investigation of all the facts first - unless you have an agenda. Tagging along with Hands U Don’t Shoot.

Police are not public servants. They never have been. Their function is to stop crime by making arrests and killing bad guys if necessary. The motto “to protect and to serve” is actually of military origin. Their duty is to protect each other and serve their superiors, not the public. But they go too far when they start seeing the public as the enemy.

The first stories on Sunday implied that she had a gun, but nobody but me seemed to notice.

I noticed. It's irrelevant. The homeowner has the right to defend her home with deadly force if she believes that to be necessary. Cops need to get through their thick skulls that We the People are armed and our practice of keeping and bearing arms does not give them an excuse to kill us.

Hey cops! Clean up your act, while you still can.

“He failed to ID himself as police.”

Oh yes, ID yourself and get blown away?

“Possible” burglary or home invasion. If police can’t be cool under pressure then they shouldn’t be cops. If the cop isn’t sure that the person with a gun is a criminal then hell yes, run instead of shoot. What kind of police state do you want to live in?

Cop may assume the person with the gun just broke into the house...

Rule 4: Identify your target, and what is beyond it.

The murderin' SOB failed to do that, and killed an innocent citizen.

I would readily agree with the first three but would have to think hard about the choice between a mosque and local democratic county chairman.

We can argue all day long about the open door. And why the cop felt it necessary to sneak around in the backyard.

But one thing is clear. If you point a gun at a cop you will get shot.

It’s called suicide by cop.

It’s tragic that she didn’t know he was a cop. And no. I’m not blaming her for leaving her front door open in a bad neighbor or even futilely trying to defend her home.

She failed at what is known as situation awareness. Again - no blame on her. The cop should go to jail.

Fail to ID the person in front of you, and murder an innocent citizen.

That's not speculation. That's simple fact. That's what happened.

You're trying to defend the indefensible.

That will end when the citizens are faster on the trigger than the gangsters in funny blue costumes.

Cops need to clean up their act, while they still can.

What I don’t understand:

—why was the 8 year old up at 2:30 am? I think that’s a fair question. Maybe if the 8 year old and his aunt had been in bed sleeping, the aunt would be alive today.
—why didn’t the police call out loudly and identify themselves? Why were they silently sneaking around?
—this was supposed to be a non-emergency “welfare check.” Why did the police seem to handle this as if they were serving a serious felony warrant?

What an absolute travesty, this never should have happened.

The murderin' bastard in a funny blue costume failed at what is known as situational awareness. HE failed to identify his target. HE allowed his muzzle to cover something (I hope) he was not willing to destroy.

The cop should go to jail.

Damn right he should. For a very long time. The last one got off easy.
