A murder warrant for Aaron Dean, the Fort Worth officer who killed Atatiana Jefferson, tells what led up to the shooting from the perspective of her 8-year-old nephew, who was in the room with her when she was shot.
The boy told a forensic interviewer that he and his aunt were playing video games together about 2:30 a.m. Saturday when she heard noises outside. She took her handgun from her purse and pointed it toward the window before she was shot, the nephew said, according to the arrest-warrant affidavit.
The 8-year-old saw his aunt fall to the ground. Jefferson, 28, was pronounced dead at 3:05 a.m.
Interim Police Chief Ed Kraus said at a news conference Tuesday that it makes sense that she would have a gun if she felt that she was being threatened or there was someone in the backyard.

” Whats it to you? “
I haven’t heard that expression since my parents used it in the 60s. Then it became sort of a humorous retort for a few years. My grandkids would have never heard it. Thanks for reminding me.
There ya go, yesterday the headline was black women answers door and gets shot and killed by white police officer. This will stop when these rag papers are sued into oblivion every time they make sh## up
If she was in a room well lit enough that the cop, outside in the dark, could see her the cop, being over the age of ten, should have known that that chance that she could see him at all would be not even slim, but none.
Always blame the cop first mentality.
The cop is the only person involved who could have done something to prevent what happened.
Unless they can prove the firearm is defective, the mere fact that the gun was fired is criminal intent in Texas. There is no “What was going through his mind”? type of defense allowed in Texas courts. There was a Texas ex-cop explaining Texas law about that on last nights thread.
6 to 16 year olds. I’m 72 and usually stay up until 4 am. My wife does the same.. If you think that late night weekends are weird then so are you.
“If you think that late night weekends are weird then so are you.”
If you think you know what I think you are weird.
The obligation here was on the cops who were sent out to check on the "welfare" of the victim, not murder her.
The fact that she was up at 2:30 AM on a Saturday with her nephew has nothing to do with this. Since when it is not okay to do what you want in your own home at any hour of the day or night, as long as it isn't illegal?
Why didn't the cop just knock on the front door and ask the woman if everything was okay? He didn't do that.
Sneaking around the back and peaking through an open window is not acceptable. He might as well have been a prowler because he never identified himself and if she saw him looking through an open window, I would have picked up the gun too.
The death is on the cop, not the victim or her nephew just because they weren't in bed at that hour.
As the old saying goes, nothing good happens after 10PM.
I do not support the officer, but what kind of guardian has an 8 yr old up at 2:30AM? Really bad parenting.
If he was peeking through windows, I’d think it would be easier to just duck than draw weapon and open fire. But so far the exact nature of what happened is speculative. That’s for the trial. My general assessment is that the cop was there to investigate a possible burglary, not go in blasting first and asking questions later. Think about this: should a person be able to carry a gun in their own home without being shot by a cop who’s peeking through the window, unannounced? It’s a yes or no answer.
“...but nobody but me seemed to notice.”
Not true. There were even pictures of a gun when the story first hit.
True. The cop was of the opinion that a person cant walk around their own home with a firearm without fear of being seen and shot from outside her home? Its outrageous.
Fort Worth is a sanctuary city for illegal immigrants. Its not official, but very obvious with just a drive through the south side. What used to be black neighborhoods is fully Mexican now.
The cops are fighting a battle everyday. Not to excuse the shooting of the fun video game playing auntie, but it is a war zone. Note to neighbor: mind your own business or go knock and see whats going on if your curious. Never call the cops unless needed to fill out the after incident report.
That is simply your very narrowminded opinion, and has no basis in fact And no relevance to the case at hand. Frankly, I find it pretty sickening that on a story about an innocent woman who was murdered in her own home, that there are people here who choose to go out of their way to make slightly disparaging comments about the victim.
.
I think these police officers all need to watch old episodes of Adam-12 to learn how to do things properly.
So they use different meanings of words in Texas? Might explain a few things.
They probably called that a good shoot.
They just took the liberal gobbledygoo out of the law.
