I suspect Turkey told him we are coming in regardless of whether you withdrawal ... what would you do?

His mistake was the way he presented it. He should have waited until Turkey attacked and then announce that he was withdrawing the troops to avoid getting stuck in the middle between the Turks and Kurds.
