Rear Admiral and Flying Ace Edward L. Feightner turns 100 today

Posted on 10/14/2019 6:52:13 AM PDT by Borges

During two combat tours, he shot down nine enemy aircraft to become a flying ace. HE was the only pilot to land the dash-1 variant of the Vought F7U Cutlass aboard a carrier. He led VF-11 to become the first Atlantic fleet unit in which every pilot received the coveted "E" award in a single exercise.

Happy Birthday Whitey!

Ace, Test Pilot, Blue Angel, Skipper, CAG, and commanded two ships.

A career that spanned F4F Hellcats to to the development of the F-14 Tomcat and F-18 Hornet. Survived the F7U Cutlass as well.

His influence is still found in the Ready Room of VFA-11, the Red Rippers.

A giant of Naval Aviation.

Love this excerpt from the Wikipedia entry on the F7:

During the Blue Angels' first airshow appearance in 1953, pilot Lt Edward "Whitey" Feightner, the former program manager for the F7U, experienced a total loss of hydraulics on a full afterburner takeoff and steep climb. While trying to gain enough altitude for ejection he was able to stay with the aircraft until the backup system came on. He clipped trees on the end of the runway, causing the left engine to flame out. With hydraulic fluid streaming back in a bright flame, he made a hard turn and got the plane back on the runway, much to the excitement of the crowd.

Dude has some brass ones!
