Catholics in the late 1800’s were regularly excluded from labor unions, fraternal organizations, and other groups that provided social services. The Knights of Columbus was founded to provide these services to Catholics particularly widows and orphaned children.
They took the name “Knights of Columbus” as a rebuke to these organizational leaders who widely considered Christopher Columbus a hero. That was hypocritical at best because Columbus was a Catholic from Spain, yet Catholic immigrants were marginalized and discriminated against. The intent was to prove Catholics were not only productive members of American society, but also instrumental in it’s foundation.
