Alexei Leonov, a Soviet-era cosmonaut who was the first human to conduct a spacewalk in 1965, died Friday in Moscow aged 85, his assistant said. "He died today in Moscow at the Burdenko hospital after a long illness," Natalia Filimonova told AFP.

The Russian space agency Roscosmos said it was saddened to announce the death of "cosmonaut No 11" who was twice decorated with the country's top honor, the Hero of the Soviet Union.

Fascinating time in Soviet space program history. They were sent on virtual suicide missions in a desperate attempt to keep pace with the USA.

His secret to a long life?

He didn't get into Soviet politics.

Had the N-1 succeeded, Leonov would have been the first Russian on the Moon. He’s also best-known for commanding the Soyuz space capsule on the Apollo-Soyuz mission in 1975.

Let’s say it like it is:
He was the first MAN to ever walk in space.

It is a big question who was trying to keep pace.

AFAIK, Vladimir Komorov was the only Cosmonaut who perished.

Of course there may have been others, but the Soviets tended not to report bad news.

I believe there were at least three others who perished that is known about. All aboard a spacecraft on re-entry. They suffocated IIRC.

There were many cosmonauts that perished in those times - more than all the apollo/shuttle deaths in the US. NSA tends not to release the transcripts.

[[[It is a big question who was trying to keep pace.]]]

True to an extent. Toward the late 60’s I’d say it was the Russians who were getting overtaken. There was an excellent documentary on it awhile back.

It paralleled the Soviet submarine program with the amount of accidents and deaths. Many kept quiet for decades. Fascinating history.

Good memory.

From Wiki:

He was outside the spacecraft for 12 minutes and nine seconds on 18 March 1965, connected to the craft by a 5.35-metre (17.6 ft) tether. At the end of the spacewalk, Leonov’s spacesuit had inflated in the vacuum of space to the point where he could not re-enter the airlock. He opened a valve to allow some of the suit’s pressure to bleed off and was barely able to get back inside the capsule. Leonov had spent eighteen months undergoing intensive weightlessness training for the mission. Leonov was the last survivor of the five cosmonauts in the Voskhod programme.

"After opening a valve to bleed off pressure, Leonov finally managed to squeeze back inside."

I heard he got hung up on his ears.

4 pilots died in Soviet program. It is not something you can hide. No fatalities since 1971.

Well he made it into space, *and* to age 85.

Probably a much better outcome in the long run than for those East German gals.

RIP.

He was the first MAN to ever walk in space.

Remarkable how language is used to push the agenda.

Tom does something no one has done -- headline: Tom is the first human to do this remarkable thing.
Sally does something that few people have done -- headline: Sally is the first woman to do this remarkable thing.

I was sick to my stomach when I transcribed this in real time - was on Valium and Librium for months.

The space virus infects everyone who leaves the protection of our gravity.

Yes, it takes a number of years to completely take over the body, but 100% will die.

Do NOT go to Mars!!

:-)
