California Gov. Gavin Newsom ‘outraged’ by PG&E blackouts, but says they’re needed

California Gov. Gavin Newsom said Wednesday he’s “outraged” over Pacific Gas and Electric Co shut-offs, blaming decades of mismanagement at the utility.

He made the comments Wednesday morning, several hours after millions of Californians woke up without power amid massive blackouts that have stranded huge swaths of the state without electricity.

Given the potential danger posed by the utility’s power lines, Newsom said the blackouts are needed to keep

“I’m outraged because it didn’t have to happen,” Newsom told reporters at a news conference in San Diego. “They’re in bankruptcy due to their terrible management going back decades. They’ve created these conditions, it was unnecessary.”

Most of the outages are in the hills ringing the Sacramento Valley and the state’s wine country where Newsom, who made his fortune in the wine business, noted that his wineries are in the midst of grape crushing season and desperate for power.

“I’d rather criticize Donald Trump than act like him, talking about my businesses in Northern California, but we’re in the middle of wine crush and folks are running around trying to get generators right now,” he said. “It’s very consequential.”

They are in bankruptcy for several reasons - one of which is Kalifornia laws about clear cutting...Gavin will use this to push climate control and Tesla owners will find out it's too late to charge their cars before the power is cu.....

“ No, the state will screw with the company that made the generator — not enough money in an individual.”

I live in Illinois and installed a 10kw generator and a transfer switch a few years ago. The instruction manual had “Not Legal For Use In California” on page 3. The reason? The buyer needs to install a California approved spark arrester on the exhaust. Which, of course, was NOT included.

So when Joe Citizen fires up his 2kw Generac he bought at Lowe’s sometime in the last few years he’s an instant criminal.

So that’s nice.

BTW my in laws are sitting in El Dorado County in the dark for the second day as I write this. His 2kw Generac sitting on his back porch, no California Approved Spark Arrester installed. He’s got one 5 gallon gas can. No power at any of the local filling stations so he can’t get any more.

I told him to get a tri fuel kit so he could run it off the propane tank he has sitting in his backyard. But he didn’t.

No telling when they’ll turn the juice back on.

I converted my 15 KW Generac to propane (actually gasoline or propane) with a kit from an outfit called Motorsnorkel. Works like a dream.

But, when I put my propane tank in I opted to pay $25 per year more for a 500 gallon instead of a 250 gallon tank. A lot of emergency preparedness there.

The spark arrestors are an easy aftermarket add-on. They are just a heavy-duty stainless screen.

That’s where I got ours. Had a plumber install a 1-1/2 inch line to run it off the natural gas that feeds the house. Much much cheaper than running it on gasoline. And we don’t have to worry about the local stations not being in service.

Hooked it into a transfer switch at the breaker box and labeled all the circuits so we can pick and choose what to power. ProTran makes those. Slick.

Very smart, that.

I’m sure. But how many folks up there in fire country bothered with them? It only takes one idiot, after all. And the world seems to be turning out idiots in job lots these days.

Stay safe.

Yup; you probably could.

But you should be asking 2k to 2500 each, they would still go like hot cakes (cash only).

When most of those people lose their power AND their “DEVICES” don’t work, they have a tendency to go a little bit over the edge.

“He will push to “nationalize” PG&E. “

stockholders have nothing to lose: PG&E is in bankruptcy with 30 billion legal liability and 10 billion in maintenance backlogs because the state refuses rate increases to provide for maintenance and mandates fire-starting power line right-of-way management .... maybe the state would reverse their insane positions if they had to run the show ...

better yet, i’d love to see the board of directors quit-claim the entire corporation to the state and then resign en masse ...

They ABSOLUTELY made the right decision to hit the off switch.

Just for giggles I checked to see how much CALPERS has in PG&E. As of January, only about 47 mil. So they're not doing this to protect CALPERS.
