Pacific Gas & Electric, California’s biggest utility company, shut off electricity to more than 1 million people on Wednesday in an effort to prevent wildfires caused by downed power lines.
The utility said it cut power to more than 500,000 customers in Northern California and that it plans to gradually turn off electricity to nearly 800,000 customers to prevent its equipment from starting wildfires during hot, windy weather. A second group of about 234,000 customers will lose power starting at noon, the utility said. The power outages are expected to affect about 2.5 million people.
The utility plans to shut off power in parts of 34 northern, central and coastal California counties to reduce the chance of fierce winds knocking down or toppling trees into power lines during a siege of hot, dry, gusty weather.
Gusts of 35 mph to 45 mph were forecast to sweep a vast swath of the state, from the San Francisco Bay area to the agricultural Central Valley and especially in the Sierra Nevada foothills, where a November wildfire blamed on PG&E transmission lines killed 85 people and virtually incinerated the town of Paradise.
"This is a last resort," said Sumeet Singh, head of the utility's Community Wildfire Safety Program.
However, people should be outraged by the move, Gov. Gavin Newsom said. "No one is satisfied with this, no one is happy with this," he said.

Exactly. Cali is officially a 3rd world sh*thole now. Those with resources will run generators (how “green” is that). Everybody else... too bad. Small businesses will have to shut down, but the silicon mega-corps will have “green” backup power. Government is “critical infrastructure” so they are exempt.

I find it to be a crime that they would inconvenience rural folks and accommodate city folks. It is a division of class and importance.
Looked at my electric bill - the electric rate is 38cents a kwh!! That’s like triple the rest of the country.
Yesterday, A Facebook friend from Northern California posted a photo of gas lines at Costco and said it felt like everybody thought the world was ending today.
I had to read some comments to even know what he was talking about. Made me want to post a question and ask how could the world be ending, this is only happening in California??
I also got a chuckle reading through the comments and seeing a couple people blaming Trump for this happening.
They won’t lose customers. There’s no other choice.
put the homeless in shelters, have them ride bicycles that are connected to generator. AFter they generate a kilowatt of power, let them have a sandwich...and give them a bunk.
You are exactly right, this is not just a Ca problem. This disease is spreading across the whole nation. the suspicious person that I am, I can’t help wondering if there is a conspiracy behind this situation to snag some federal dollars.

unfortunately a multitude of lawsuits by the Sierra Club, Greenpeace, Earth First,... and a lot of Judicial Decisions have prevented Any and ALL Clearing or cleaning up of our forests.
Everyone should Publicly thank the Sierra Club for their woes.
