Turkey launches offensive in northern Syria with air strikes

Turkish warplanes have bombed parts of north-eastern Syria at the start of an offensive which could lead to conflict with Kurdish-led allies of the US.

Turkey's President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said the operation was to create a "safe zone" cleared of Kurdish militias which will also house Syrian refugees.

The strikes have killed at least two civilians, Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) said.

The group vowed to resist any Turkish advance across the border.

It asked the US and the coalition against the jihadist group Islamic State (IS) to establish a no-fly zone in the area to stop "attacks on innocent people".

The Kurds - key US allies in defeating IS in Syria - guard thousands of IS fighters and their relatives in prisons and camps in areas under their control and it is unclear whether they will continue to be safely detained.

Turkish ground forces have been massing on the border. The offensive was launched just days after President Donald Trump controversially withdrew US troops from northern Syria, a decision announced after a phone call with Mr Erdogan that sparked widespread criticism at home and abroad.

“” “” Give the Kurds MANPADS
and a CAP with an aerial exclusion zone””” “

LOL. Turkey is one of the top military powers in the World. The only one after US in NATO worth a thing. Yes, a NATO ally. And you want to fight them over some far left commie mountain tribe? In order to be consistent you need to start with disbanding NATO first.

“” “” Funny that we have not heard a word from Assad or Russia.”” “”

They’d register their displeasure through 4th deputy heads of 19th departments of their foreign ministries.
The ministers themselves and the military will speak once the Kurds are tamed by the Turks.
Assad and Putin will smile and say Erdogan he is a good boy.

That’s to be expected because of common goals. Now tell me the difference between YPK and PKK. I guess the same as between Al-Qaeda and Nusra. None. A new politically correct name.

What’s the difference? You seriously don’t know?

PKK = commie terrs and YPK = Peshmerga and NOT communist.
Solid Kurdish freedom fighters, NOT fanatical muz a-holes.
Ask our SF guys what they think of the Peshmerga.
They state that they have been some of our p=best partners EVER.
Worthy of our support and alliance with. They have earned it

I’M ####ING DISGUSTED BY THE COMMENTS HERE BY PEOPLE WHOSE COMMENTS I USUALLY RESPECT.
THEY ARE GUARDING THOUSANDS OF ISIS MEMBERS, THE KURDS, IN THAT AREA.But as per FR rules I KNOW none of you who ####ing think Kurds deserved to be ####ed YET AGAIN read that far.
Turkey HELPED ISIS BUY BUYING A FORTUNE IN FUEL AND GIVING FREE AND SAFE PASSAGE.I ####ing want to THROW UP at some of these MORONIC responses.
____________________________________________________________Ditto. The one people who threw in with us, non-extremist, friendly and willing to fight. You let the Turks kill them and you wont have a single friend in the Middle-east. And if you don’t care remember that we have had a presence over their since World War 2. The effort to safeguard the Kurds is small for the benefit they offer.

Actually, the Free Syrian Army is fighting alongside the Turks and opposition group recognized by the US and Europe endorsed the Turkish invasion. Assad might be the big loser out of this deal.

The say was Nusra are freedom fighters and not Islamists.
It turned out to be a renamed Al-Qaeda. Renamed for a single reason because it was too tough to have Pentagon supply them with weapons and money under old name.
The very same thing here.

Sanctions? When in modern history have those ever done a thing? Why would some pre-moderns care about economic sanctions?

Erdogan has already been hurt by the election victory of a competing group in the major cities.
