Turkey launches offensive in northern Syria with air strikes

Turkish warplanes have bombed parts of north-eastern Syria at the start of an offensive which could lead to conflict with Kurdish-led allies of the US.

Turkey's President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said the operation was to create a "safe zone" cleared of Kurdish militias which will also house Syrian refugees.

The strikes have killed at least two civilians, Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) said.

The group vowed to resist any Turkish advance across the border.

It asked the US and the coalition against the jihadist group Islamic State (IS) to establish a no-fly zone in the area to stop "attacks on innocent people".

The Kurds - key US allies in defeating IS in Syria - guard thousands of IS fighters and their relatives in prisons and camps in areas under their control and it is unclear whether they will continue to be safely detained.

Turkish ground forces have been massing on the border. The offensive was launched just days after President Donald Trump controversially withdrew US troops from northern Syria, a decision announced after a phone call with Mr Erdogan that sparked widespread criticism at home and abroad.

Close Incirlik - Al Asad works just as well

“Close Incirlik “

Even if we made the decision tomorrow, it would be a year happening. Unless you want Americans and their families to leave everything and flee. Also, there will be millions of dollars worth of hardware that needs to be repaired and moved and probably warehouses full of spare parts.

We should have started exiting Incirlik immediately after Turkey denied us sending the 4thID in from the north at the start of OIF. They put the deployment of the 173D AB in jeopardy.

What if you started a GoFundMe campaign for your personal deployment to support the Kurds? I would welcome that and could contribute.

How about the Kurds simply blowing up the ISIS prisons & blame it on the Turks? Oh, that would mean that a whole lot of CIA recruited fanatical Islamic mercenaries would get the retribution they deserve......(can’t have that)

Question: What does President DJT stand to gain from potentially pissing off a bunch of admittedly milque-toast republicans in the Senate with this action? Like it or not, he will need them should articles of impeachment reach the Senate. Confused about the broader strategy here.

Just saying pulling 50 troops doesn’t add up to 8 trillion dollars Trump mentioned in his tweet. So the statement that he wants US troops out of the middle east has no credibility.

"For removing 50 troops?"

OH, his intention with regard to removing troops?

So the troops won't be there.

DJT has a plan and the plan basically has to do with the ME countries policing each other. He has talked with the friendly nations and they are aboard. From what I read the other day, those nations are in agreement with DJT. The Turks will only take enough of Syria to house the two million Syrian refugees now in Turkey. Turkey knows that if they get too rambunctious, DJT will tighten the economic screws, something the Turks fear.
