A shooting outside a synagogue in the eastern German city of Halle has left at least two people dead. Police detained one person after multiple suspects fled the scene.
A deadly shooting broke out in the eastern German city of Halle on Wednesday afternoon, German police said, killing at least two people.
The shooting took place in the city's Paulusviertel district near where a synagogue is located, police said. It remains unclear, however, whether the synagogue is related to the shooting, although it took place the same day as Yom Kippur, the holiest day of the year in Judaism.
Halle police confirmed on Twitter that "multiple shots were fired" and that multiple suspects fled the scene in a car.
Police said that at least one person has been detained but asked residents to "remain alert" as other suspects may still be at large.
Authorities earlier advised people to remain indoors or find a safe place inside.
At least one of the suspects was wearing a military-style combat uniform and was armed with "multiple weapons," eye-witnesses told local public broadcaster MDR.
The main train station in Halle, located outside the city of Leipzig, was also closed as police continue to search for the suspects.
Shots were also reported in the neighboring town of Landsberg following the shooting in Halle, but police did not immediately provide further details or say whether the two shootings were related.
Officials said that police protection near synagogues was being strengthened in Halle, Leipzig, and Dresden for the time being. In Leipzig, major commemorations are planned for this evening to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the rallies that eventually led to the fall of the Berlin Wall.

Presently, at least with local news covering it....no one is sure if the target was the Turkish grill or the Jewish synagogue. It does appear that the gunfight started at the grill.
Could be some crime family hit on another crime family but I’d give it six hours before you hear the rest of the story.

Might be a coincidence. The first dead guy is pulled out of the Turkish grill. There appears to be a gunman in the possession of the cops now, but it also appears that some guy (maybe a group of guys) got into a car and sped away real quick. Cops can’t say if they are part of the story, or just bystanders. Some chatter too...about a grenade or smoke-device being thrown into the doorway of the grill operation.
Sure does appear to be crime family related (like what has been going on in NW Germany).
According to Der Spiegel several men tried to force their way into the synagogue. Hmmmm..........
The Turkish grill or bakery operation...is about 150 feet from the entrance to the synagogue. The Jewish cemetery is about 10 feet to the east of the synagogue, with cops saying some type of explosive device was thrown over there.
Once shooting was heard or confirmed by some guard associated with the synagogue...he locked down the doorway and no one entered. It may be that innocent people on the street were seeking refuge there, or the getaway was screwed up and attackers (plural) had issues.
Lot of discussion on N24 (commercial news in Germany) that it was minimum of two guys. Cops currently hold someone that they think was part of the group.
I appreciate your objectivity. It still doesn’t change the longer term nature of the threat there.
The ‘threat’ is always pieced together and missing key parts to the story.
Mafia crime families over the past twenty years (really going back to the Wall coming down)....have grown to be a major problem in dozens of German urbanized areas. Crime gangs from Serbia, Russia, the Ukraine, Albania, Italy, Lebanon, etc.
German cops are being out-played on the court, and public trust in the legal system and judges is hurting politics in general.
You toss in the failed-asylum players of the past five years....who fit into the crime gang agenda as dope salesmen, and the younger generation complicating commerce as daily shoplifters.
All of this threat stuff leads to more lighting around homes to prevent break-ins...more police patrols at village fests...and just plain weird crime.
At some point two years ago in far east Germany...they had a cattle-rustling ‘gang’ that was taking between forty and a hundred cattle on a monthly basis (would just simply disappear and one assumes taken to some Polish butcher operation).
You have elder German retires who get this call that their nephew ‘Johann’ is in jail, and he needs bail of 10,000 Euro. Well, they run down to fetch 10,000 out of the bank and this fake-police guy shows up at the house to accept the 10,000. In my region, this happens weekly, and banks routinely ask why older Germans are there to take out any sum over 1,000 Euro.
The threat here is that for decades...especially in the old West German days, there just wasn’t much to fret over or worry about. Now? You continually have to pay attention to just about everything. It’s still safer than driving around the Atlanta metro area, but there’s probably 400,000 individuals in Germany (out of 82-million) who are actively working on robbery or crime-agenda, on a daily basis.
I sat there around Xmas of last year in a shopping district, and watched some guy (maybe 16) being chased down an escalator, and the store detective caught him at the very bottom. Guy had a cheapo Tab (not worth more than 200 Euro). Street value? He wouldn’t have gotten more than 40 Euro for it (even brand new). All of this nickel and dime stuff is what makes Germans shake their heads.
Now in the last hour, German cops are saying there is some right-wing element to the attack. Two of the guys in the attack...hijacked a car and took off on the autobahn toward Munich. Appears they got safely away...the 3rd guy is in police custody.
Witnesses say the attack on the Turkish grill shop involved some guy in mil-gear and a military helmet.
Your perspective on Germany-related matters is always appreciated. And I have a question. What’s the deal with the “military-style combat uniform”? Would a Turkish hit man wear such an item? For that matter, would an Islamist?
Go over to Youtube, look up Halle, and a 25-second video of this one guy on the street firing a round or two. He doesn’t appear to be worried or in any kind of hurry. Odd behavior.
As far as I know...no crime family operation would include some guy in a ‘mil-style’ uniform...either from the Turks, the Kurds, the Lebanese, etc.
It would almost seem like he had someone hire him for a hit-job, and he wanted to make a mass confusion situation out of this....throwing a grenade into the act, and having this next to a Jewish synagogue.
There’s been hit-jobs by various clan families and I might suspect that someone hired a Russian guy to throw off the German cops. Some confusion exists....this guy caught....may not be the gunman. Some story says shooters (plural). Another problem is that a second shooting about 10 miles away occurs around the same time...maybe connected...maybe not.
I’ll add this comment...a state election in eastern Germany occurs in two weeks. Maybe some crazy element in the election business wanted the public all hyped-up.
Any right-wing group would be transitioning from “We are just protecting our heritage” to “ethnic cleansing” which I always thought would be a natural transition. Going after Jews shows that no one is safe since the Jews are not anything close to a threat to anyone in Europe. Canaries in the coal mine

No, it was because Israel elected a female leader. Unlike the West, they don’t have the luxury of electing unqualified leaders, and they never made that kind of mistake again.
If this was a hit-job on a crime family, it was poorly planned out. If this was about the Jews, why hit the Turk shop first? All this shooting, and just two dead?
It’s more of a scripted show to me, than anything else.
