Pacific Gas and Electric Co. said Monday that it might preemptively cut power this week to much of Northern California — including almost all of the Bay Area — to prevent power lines from sparking wildfires during dry and windy weather.
The shut-off watch, covering 29 of the state’s 58 counties, is unprecedented in scope and could grow as forecasts come into focus. Customers in parts of the counties could lose power as soon as Wednesday morning, and the watch extends through Thursday.
Seven of the nine Bay Area counties — all but San Francisco and Marin — were advised of the potential outage, along with the North Coast, the northern parts of the Central Valley and the northern and central Sierra and foothills. The company cited a “potentially widespread, strong and dry wind event.”
A shut-off watch precedes a warning of an actual planned outage.

I will bookmark that...Working on a littl project...building a new Pi4 node and using a RIM-Lite to hook it up to an Alinco 235 and going to get one of Ed Fong’s 220 antennas, (he’s down in the Bay Area and its Cheap...) Plan on running it at say 10 watts and let area amateurs tune in to the Alaskan Morning net in the am, To the ,WInsystem till after the Insomniac net and then maybe the Manchester Hub over in England after that...Anyway, that’s my project.
Got an Icom 751 beast to hook up. Got plenty of room for antennas but thinking about the DX Commander...great bloke out of England. Look up his youtubes...he’s one of us...anyway, he is putting out a multi-band vertical that appears to work like a champ. Can even do 80 on it, but 160 is just too much line...$270 total including shipping to the states..

Lots of good conservative people live in CA. Mostly rural areas. I have very good friends there, lived in CA their whole lives. Their electricity is going off for at least 48 hours. Sierra foot hills.
It’s my understanding that shutting off the power worsened things exponentially.
No communication to spread the word? And everything else you mentioned.
I’m still not buying it that these fires occurred organically.
When I hear they’re fixing to shut off that much stuff it makes me real nervous.

I live in North Central Florida. I have seen power lines running from the main pole to my mobile home spark. The lines ran through trees and when the wind blew the lines onto the limbs they would spark. The power company came right out and trimmed the limbs back out of the way.
That seems like a better solution than shutting the whole grid down.

Check out this video. It is long, but what go me on the path and ultimately a local Neighborhood Watch was created in our area...ALan’s presentations are shorter now and the follow up is now called “Radio for the Rest of US..” Our local area has set up a Neighborhood Radio Watch just for this purpose. IT was done quickly over the summer and we even have a repeater going up very shortly....
I discovered this video not long after Alan’s presentation and had been in contact with him ever since. We shared ideas and information. I got him to speak at our local club twice. Both times I could not be there because my work takes me out of state for months at a time...But the ball got rolling and that is a good thing. You can do the same thing in your area...

They’re probably not able to produce enough power and don’t want brownouts ruining their equipment.
I have seen two transformers just randomly spark and blow up.. one while sitting at a restaurant on vacation in the northeast, and another while driving near my home. So sparks and explosions are possible with electric lines.
Maybe the electric lines are less stable now for some reason, as these two instances above were fairly recent- 2009 and 2017ish.
