My mom was one of countless Long Island moms who were against Shoreham. We cant evacuate from a meltdown and all that. I seem to recall that Cuomo the First actually supported the plant (broken clock at 12)

Funny thing is, when Hurricane Bob came speeding up the coast a few years later you know how they effected the LI evacuation? Dusted off the evacuation plans for a Shoreham incident. It all went like clockwork. Interesting how THAT never made the papers.

Mario Cuomo ended up wrecking the plant. He managed to browbeat LILCo into selling Shoreham to NYPA for $1 in exchange for future rate hikes to recover the cost of ruining the plant. To make sure no one would ever use the plant for its intended purpose, he arranged to have a cutting torch activated by a bottom on his desk in Albany that punched a hole in the pressure vessel. That effectively ruined it and the only value it had after that was scrap metal.
