What? That it was posted in the security office one day when I went in to get a base permit, and they told me it was no longer required, then every time afterwards I was allowed to just get my license barcode scanned at the checkpoint then waved through? Well, I must have had a recurring nightmare about it for two years.

Get your facts straight. I lived it.

You still need valid Identification AND authorization to get on military facilities. If you do NOT have valid DoD ID, you need to go to the pass office and present additional documents, including a contract, ID, etc. If you live in a state where the DL meets Real ID requirements, and you have a valid reason to enter the base, that DL is scanned and input into the system for the specified period. Scanning your Real ID DL is actually far more secure than the old paper passes. If I leave my ID at home, I don’t get on base.
