My view is that the "Deep State" consists of well-placed (high-ranking) members of the permanent federal bureaucracy, particularly the intelligence agencies, and/or high-ranking appointed officials in those bureaucracies who have a sense of entitlement and privilege to pursue their own objectives regardless of whether those objectives are consistent with the goals of the current administration or of congressional majorities.

They constitute a "government within the government" that is relatively impervious to congressional or executive oversight or control. When aided and abetted by the media, they are extremely powerful and extremely dangerous.

Just the other night, on CNN, a member of this clique chillingly claimed that Rudy Giuliani deserves "a shiv in his back" because he is interfering with the operations of the "brotherhood."
