GOP Leadership Memo Suggests Senate Cannot Block Trial If House Votes To Impeach Trump
Huffpost ^ | Sept 28 2019 | Mary Papenfuss

The Republican leadership issued a memo Saturday clarifying that the Senate must take action if the House of Representatives approves articles of impeachment against President Donald Trump. The statement came in response to concerns that the Senate could simply refuse to hold a trial.

“There is no way we could somehow bar the doors and prevent the managers from presenting the articles to the Senate,” stated the memo, which was obtained by HuffPost. “The rules of impeachment are clear on this point.”

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) also said as much in a March interview with NPR: “If it [impeachment] were to happen, the Senate has no choice. If the House were to act, the Senate immediately goes into a trial.”

Has anybody asked McConnell whether, if Ruth Buzzy were to kick the can, he would allow the senate to vote on whomever Trump nominates, while Trump is on trial in the senate?

McConnell has said he'd vote to fill any vacancy on the Supreme Court. Whether an impeachment trial would change that remains to be seen.

BTW, how is Buzzy doing?

Alive and kicking.

First of all, Justice Roberts “could” declare that the whole shebang is unworthy of proceeding.

But Roberts being Roberts he won't. He'll let the Senate vote on it.

Do you really think a majority of the US military will side against Trump?

Depends on what he's doing. If it's Constitutional then the military will be behind the President. If it's not Constitutional then they won't.

Before pissing everyone off here, at least quote the article accurately as to the relevant points. The article also states: “McConnell could call a vote on a motion to dismiss, which would effectively amount to a vote to acquit Trump of wrongdoing.”

Takes 67 votes to remove. Even if all those vote to impeach, and it wouldn’t surprise me if they did, the Democrats still need 15 more.

Coward GOP bastards!

They want to be players, but they are headed for such an insignificant minority that the democrats will toss them a quarter for a shoe shine when they see them in the halls of Congress.

“The rules of impeachment are clear on this point.”

Well, change the rules Mitch.

>Interesting. So why then did House Dems rain subpoenas on the Trump admin last week?

>You seem to be ignoring the political reality here. It’s the Dems doing all the investigation. The GOP, to quote another FReeper, is in a coma right now.

Yes, it’s oversight issuing all the subpoenas and Pelosi setting several “councils” for investigation of other issues. However, no one is actually voting for impeachment. An impeachment inquiry is simply confining all investigatory power to the House when the Constitution designates it for the Senate after the House votes for impeachment.

No matter how it plays out it will be a circus with unsubstantiated allegations yelled at the top of their lungs.

the actual, for real “whistleblower” in this whole circumstance is the President and this retributive show trial being orchestrated in the House is about Federal retribution upon a whistleblower (President Trump) for having shone the light of day upon their treasonous, seditious conniving

“Yeah, the House has avoided a vote even on an Impeachment inquiry.”

And all our domestic enemies have called it an impeachment inquiry.

POTUS calling himself the real whistleblower is a great turn of phrase and will no doubt enrage the Uniparty/Deep State. Ha ha.

I think Trump would welcome a trial.

That would be his opportunity to declassify EVERYTHIGN and put it out there for America to see.

The Senate cannot stop the House from delivering Articles of Impeachment.

The House cannot stop the Senate, after the Articles are read, from immediately having a vote, and voting “not guilty”.

If McConnell can keep the R’s together, then he will set the rules.

He could get the Senate to vote for unlimited discovery.

True, BUT, it scares me that momentum may build in the Senate. We know the Leftstream media is driving the narrative.

Unless the conservative voice speaks up this could happen.

Trial in the senate so they can bring Horowitz, Duram and whoever else has evidence on the left. Maybe that has been our plan all along but we wanted to wait until we were closer to election. That is my prayer anyway. I’m optimistic.

“If a Senate trial happens, get the popcorn. Discovery will be FUN to watch.”

Nobody who’s been paying attention for the last two years believes that “they” will turn over everything in Discovery. They’ll hold back anything they like, and nobody will know the difference.
