The Republican leadership issued a memo Saturday clarifying that the Senate must take action if the House of Representatives approves articles of impeachment against President Donald Trump. The statement came in response to concerns that the Senate could simply refuse to hold a trial.
There is no way we could somehow bar the doors and prevent the managers from presenting the articles to the Senate, stated the memo, which was obtained by HuffPost. The rules of impeachment are clear on this point.
Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) also said as much in a March interview with NPR: If it [impeachment] were to happen, the Senate has no choice. If the House were to act, the Senate immediately goes into a trial.

Really? In order for this to be true, voters must ignore the craziness of these. Democrats. If we have enough brain dead voters that believe the lies by these Democrats, then the whole country is gone. Who believes we only have 10 years until we disappear, they can eliminate all airplanes and replace them with high speed trains? Who believes these Democrats can deliver on their promises to give everyone everything for free? The lies go on and on. How long can they continue to fool enough people for them to win elections?
Doesn’t really matter what BS the House pulls. The Senate can review and reject the House impeachment (where no Roll Call Vote took place).
There’s no requirement for a trial. In fact when Andrew Jackson was impeached the US Senate rejected 8 of the 11 items deeming them not worthy.
The Senate could do so again but I don’t see this going anywhere.
The House did not hold a Roll Call Vote to begin impeachment proceedings.
This is kabuki theater and everyone is ignoring that simple fact.
The GOP senators may not like Trump or fear Trump or respect Trump but they are terrified of his base. There is nowhere near 20 Republican senators who would vote to convict on impeachment for fear of what his base would do to them.
If I was Trump I would want a trial! Finally he would be able to cross examine !!!
The senate not having a trial would provide the Dems and deep state cover that it was rigged going into the election because Trump would be convicted
You meant Andrew Johnson, right?
A MEMBER OF THE GANG OF GOPe...
just a feeling i get when reading you....smh...wake up FREE REPUBLIC..
“.....the Democrats still need 15 more.”

Wouldn’t the dems need 20 more?
53 Republicans......47 democrats are the current make-up of the Senate, correct? (And I’m counting Sanders of Vermont and Angus King of Maine, the so-called “Independents,” as
democrats).
Fifteen plus the five mentioned in reply 55 - Collins, Murkowski, Paul, Isackson, and Romney.
It’s not a legal proceeding, but a political one. John Roberts will limit discovery to protect the Dems’ case.
Drop Paul from the list, but add Burr, Sasse, and Portman.
Motion to Dismiss vote by Senate only needs 51.
The House won’t even have a vote to let this get to that. It’s a big bunch of kabuki.
I say, bring on the trial.
It’s the only way we will get the truth out.
I think that’s what Trump wants anyway.
Yes, thanks. Ironically, President Andrew Jackson has a picture in the Oval.
OK.
I live in Maine.
Collins is up for re-election in 2020.
The Second Congressional District, 80% of Maine, was carried by Trump by 10 points.
Collins will lose re-election if she votes to convict.
People here are very pissed off about this whole framing of the president bullcrap, and they also are very heavily armed.
Collins’ safety could not be guaranteed if she were to vote for a conviction. The same goes for the other so-called senators. The pot is boiling, and it’s within the realm of possibility that the pot could boil over.
Republicans have gone insane or all got paid off by Soros.
Neither possibility is a good one.
Hold the trial and let the Dems present the “evidence” which will be nothing more than hearsay and inadmissible as evidence. Then move to dismiss all charges.
When they impeached Bill the Senate Parliamentarian ran the show because the Chief had no clue what his roll was. As for the Senate taking a special oath to set on the jury, they immediately broke that oath as soon as they got before a camera.
I dont think they care. Most republicans lean left anyway. There is very few who actually fight for the base. Most hate Trump voters as much as Dems.
