Even if I lived there, I wouldn’t keep my money in a Mexican bank. I’d have a local account with just enough to cover three months’ worth of living expenses, and wire more into it from abroad as required.

Bingo! I suspect they'll be doing that in the future...

No sympathy from me! Any Westerner who retires to (or even visits) a 4th World narco-terrorist cesspool deserves what they get.

US banks are canceling expat accounts since the Treasury and the IRS has made any paper work mistake punishable by major fines and clawbacks.

The challenges of getting FBAR and FACTA perfect in any situation ensure that, even with professionals, the taxpayer ends up with bearing a high degree of risk.

Both foreign and US banks are tired of the cost of compliance.

It is entirely a man-made problem with such variable enforcement ... oh, wait, that is what the gov’t always does when they want power over a group or an individual.

I am very bitter about Mexicans since my family has been robbed multiple times by the ugly little a-holes. And guess what - despite it being perfectly obvious who the culprits were - they got away with it. In my daughter’s case in Seattle - her husband was upstairs when they came in (having broken into her car the night before) and the husband scared them off but not before they got some things which they then took to a pawn shop where they were caught. The thief’s lawyer (probably paid for by us) said that they had been given a key. So they got off! What sort of justice system is this?

In my case, in Portland, the detective refused to investigate 17k of stuff stolen. And the Mexican owner of the company didn’t care that his employees stole from me. These were cleaning people and I’ve had maids all my life but wasn’t robbed until I hired Mexicans.

That being said - I’ve seen some really good hard working Mexicans who impressed me but the fact remains that they have a ton of thieves in their culture.

Good libertarians should avoid the highly regulated American banks.

This is another area where I disagree with the AARP. Every day, not just April 18th, is “National Pinata Day” when Mexican Nationals are dealing with American gringos.

If you have big money, it needs a better place than a bank for a decent return.

I agree...but would go a step further. My attitude is that everyone whose native tongue is Spanish is a filthy crook until proven otherwise.

Yes,I was once assaulted (not seriously) by such a creature...and got away with it.

And all chants of "racist" fall on deaf ears.

The first thing inside crooks do is stop, hold the bank statements.

Anyone who retires in a another country especially 2nd or 3rd world needs their head examined.

As soon as a revolt happens your gringo skin and wealth will be target #1

I have occasionally dreamed of living in a country where my dollar could be stretched. Mexico never crossed my radar. Not even once.
