Car sharing company Car2Go announced that it has decided to end its services in Austin and four other major cities.

The decision goes into effect on Oct. 31 in Austin, Calgary, Denver and Portland, and on Dec. 31 in Chicago.

According to the Austin American Statesman, the company's North American headquarters resides in Austin and company spokeswoman Kendell Kelton said that Car2Go intends on keeping it there.

In an update posted on its website, Car2Go said it underestimated the investment and resources that were necessary to provide a successful service in complex markets.

Car2Go said the transportation market had drastically changed, mostly for the better, since its North America launch in 2009. It said the transportation market in North America is especially volatile and that requires it to appropriately change course.

Why keep the HQ in Austin if they're pulling services there? Austin was a poor choice since most everyone in TX has a car or three. About the only need would be UT foreign students.

I wonder if it’s a coincidence all those cities are hardcore dem cities. Can’t speak to Calgary.

Give me a list of major cities in the US that aren’t hardcore dem enclaves. That won’t take long.

They are shutting down most of their operations. All that’s left are NYC, DC, SEA, Vancouver and Montreal. Even CHicago didn’t work for them.

I keep seeing Car2Go cars left parked here in DC in no parking and tow-away zones. I don’t know how you make money from that. I guess you can try to collect from the last customer, but good luck.

I can only imagine how badly these vehicles are abused and treated. Twenty thousand miles and ready to be scrapped. Idiocy.

As is true of any other business, the market will let you know if you have a viable business. Clearly there is no long term profit, no long term viable business model, for this type of business.

It sounds like a great idea, but apparently just doesn’t work in the real world. How many business ideas fail because the reality is different from the theory/dream of someone?

I never understood why people couldn’t just take the car and drive off without ever paying. They’re dinky little jogging shoes that probably couldn’t even hold a load of groceries but some people actually like that.

Reminds me of the socialist restaurant dummies who offer free meals to anyone who claims to be homeless or allow the customer to choose the price of their meal.

Very poor business modelling.

It’s not worth the time and effort. Who’d want to be caught in one of those little toys?

It also doesn’t save anything environmentally as the total drive time isn’t reduced.

Just another business thinking it is disruptive and the rules don’t apply to them.

Watch this video and listen to the completely delusional claptrap that the narrator spews. This is what we are faced with, having raised a generation of entitled, self absorbed, snowflakes who have been conditioned to believe that the world revolves around them.
