COLUMBUS, NEW MEXICO (Border Report) — Fifteen-year-old Luna Robledo, whose first name means moon, in Spanish, gets up in the moonlight around 5:45 a.m. every morning to prepare breakfast for her and her 11-year-old brother, who she has to rouse for school every weekday.

Both of their schools are in the United States, in Deming, New Mexico, about 45 miles from their home in Palomas, Mexico...

About 700 students from Palomas, Mexico, catch school buses here at the port of entry to attend public schools in the United States, said Philip Skinner who drives one of the buses.

Skinner owns the local hotel, Los Milagros, just three miles up the road and says driving the children is an easy $50 extra per day in his wallet. He drives the elementary children to Columbus Elementary School, here in Columbus.

The middle and high schoolers attend campuses in Deming about 30 miles away...

The principal for the Columbus Elementary School, Viridiana Chacon, told Border Report that 550 children at her campus — that’s 76 percent of her entire student body — live in Palomas, Mexico.

Mexico should pay for this. Bigly. Why are Americans putting up with this crap, paying taxes for aliens to get services?

They use a relatives address in the US. They need a green card or US passport to do it. They are violating the law but the school district gets paid by the head to educate them. The more the better.

They pay out-of-district tuition.

I'm sorry if I'm missing out on sarcasm, but European kids trying to pull that same scam are sent back to Europe every single day at our Ports of Entry.

They're assumed public charges.

Admittedly, its up to the supervisor at the POE, but it's frequent.

Someone is lying down on the job.

Mexico can’t even provide schools for their children?

I had a kid from San Luis Mexico in my class. His parents paid $3K tuition. Others sneak across the border and use a P.O. box in San Luis AZ or a friend or relative’s home as their local “address”.

Texas has had them coming over the Rio Grande for decades. Our tax dollars at work, feeding free meals and educating Mexico’s children, while requiring Texas schools to be bilingual because Mexico has never taught English in its schools. They are the worst freeloading neighbors in the world.

Along the border most of those guys are ethnic Mexicans, and a lot of times they have family on the other side.

You must know that.

They just say “hey man, we been doin’ this a long time, nobody ever said anything” and let it roll.

We don’t wanna be mean or nuthin’, right?

My middle school students were always telling me about this or that Mexican cartel. I didn’t want to know.

This is completely true, but, oddly, the Latino Agents/Officers are undoubtely amongst the "hard-assesd" men and women I've ever met. The Irish, Italian, American mutt types are WAY more bleeding heart that the Latino officers/agents. You talk to them about KDR, you can literally see them curl their faces in disgust, and the group I was with was completely random.

Spending a lot of time with a lot of them was a real eye opener.

I seriously doubt European school children commute back-and-forth each day for school.
