Whoever the Dem candidate is, he or she starts with 40+ % of the general electorate. What happens after that remains to be seen.
It was a matter of timing, but Trump knew that sooner or later he had to torpedo Biden. Remember Biden is an old school establishment liberal. Our RINOs could have worked with him and gotten behind him and we would have had more of the same swamp behavior from 2020-2028. What’s left are harridans, radical progressives, islamophiles, open border globalists if not out-right avowed communists. Trump doesn’t need to take them any more seriously than he took low-energy Jeb! or little Marco.
