During a Council on Foreign Relations discussion on January 23, 2018, former Vice President Joe Biden spoke about his dealings in Ukraine. In his comments, Biden said if a Ukrainian prosecutor investigating a company where his son worked was not fired, the U.S. would withhold $1 billion in U.S. funding for Ukraine. Biden said he gave them an ultimatum to fire the prosecutor in the next six hours or they were not getting the money. Biden’s son, Hunter Biden, was paid in excess of $1 million by the Ukrainian company that was under investigation.

The timing of the Joe Biden story in the phone call to the Ukraine is propitious in that the president of the Ukraine says in the transcript that he will have a new prosecutor who will begin looking into this in September.

Biden had previously disclosed in his personal memoirs that he “had been on the phone with either Poroshenko or… Yatsenyuk, or both, almost every week” for months attempting to guide nearly every major decision of the Poroshenko administration after the overthrow of Viktor Yanukovych in the 2014 coup d’état which inaugurated the Ukraine crisis.
