There is a lot of information here, but I suppose it would not be PC to point out that the Black Hills and the region's birthplace of great Sioux leaders such as Sitting Bull, Red Cloud and Crazy Horse had been their homes for less than a century before the tribe's initial contact with white men.
We know this because of their recorded history in winter counts and the fact that early explores like LaVereandre (18th century) and Lewis & Clark (19th century) encountered not Sioux in their explorations of what is now the Dakotas but Siouxian cousins such as the Mandan and Hidatsa who arrived their three centuries or more earlier.
The Sioux had chosen the more productive lands of what is now the eastern Dakotas, Minnesota, Nebraska and Iowa while their weaker aforementioned cousins had pushed on the western Dakotas mostly so they could practice agriculture and be left alone.
I remember them starting building this in High School.
All they had was the arm pit hole
[ WHO SPEAKS FOR CRAZY HORSE? ]
For a second there, I thought this was an Elizabeth Warren thread....lol
In before the inevitable Elizabeth Warren pictures.
Oops. Typed too slow.
Who cares about Crazy Horse. He was so disliked by the other Sioux chiefs that they met with General Crook and wanted Crook to assassinate CH. Crook refused.
When he died, the other chiefs felt no great loss. CH didn’t even die the way it is popularly recorded.
On his way to the guard house, he pulled out two daggers, one made from a bayonet, and started slashing at those around him. Another Sioux by the name of LITTLE BIG MAN (the real one) jumped on CH’s back and grabbed his hands to stop him slashing. The soldier there thrust with his bayonet, AND MISSED, hitting the guard house door. In the struggle, CH accidentally stabbed himself.
So are the words of LITTLE BIG MAN to General crook some time later.
When I saw it, it didn’t even have the arm hole. Just the more-or-less flattened top of his arm.
The whole of academia speaks for Crazy Horse and any other Indian. They are now the heroes of history and any white man of the era is the darkest of villains.
7th Annual Fall Volksmarch - September 29th, 2019
This autumn hike on Sunday, September 29th is held the same weekend as the Custer State Park Buffalo Round-Up. It is the publics second chance of the year to walk up the worlds largest mountain carving in progress.
Ridin’ into town alone by the light of the moon
I’m lookin’ for old Sukie Jones, she crazy horse saloon
I was there around 1980. Whenever it was, there was only the armpit hole. It has apparently been a very slow go in trying to complete it.
LOL
