U.S. immigration court backlog now exceeds a million cases

The immigration court backlog now exceeds one million cases, according to Syracuse University's Transactional Records Access Clearinghouse, which tracks immigration court data.

Immigration courts, which fall under the U.S. Justice Department and decide whether to deport immigrants, have been bogged down over the years as more cases are added to the docket that can be addressed at any given time.

"If nothing else, the continuing rise of the backlog shows that the immigration court is broken," said Judge Ashley Tabaddor, president of the National Association of Immigration Judges. "Until we fix the design defect of having a court in a law enforcement agency, we will not be able to address the backlog in a fair and effective manner."

President Donald Trump has repeatedly criticized the nation's immigration system, specifically taking issue with the practice of releasing immigrants while they await their court dates. To remedy that, his administration has sought to hire more immigration judges in the hopes of unclogging the court. Even so, the number of cases has continued to tick upward.

Build the wall!

Easy enough to get a rubber stamp with "deport". Better yet, turn them around at the border.

A million more cars on the road. Does that make things better or worse?

Ah, no. Let’s say a ship has a huge hole in it, and is taking in way more water than the bilge pump can handle. That ship is in trouble. But it’s not because the bilge pump is “broken”.

right now, 99.44 percent of them need to be turned back at the border and NOT let into USA

our cities are flooded with illegals and they are taking over many of the suburban communities too

it is wrong, and dangerous considering all the Muslim men of fighting age among the illegals! also Mexican drug gangsters

we need to Drain our Swamps of them all! then, and only then, can we consider PROPER and CHECKED-OUT applicants for immigration status

The problem is an intentional mis-interpretation of what asylum means.

If you are a significant political figure, and the secret police are after you, - and we like you... - you qualify for asylum. Until you can go back and overthrow the regime, and only until then. This does not require a hearing, its properly a State Department decision.

Ten thousand farmers and laundresses do not qualify for asylum. This does not require a hearing. A front line BP cop, with his supervisor, can make this determination in about five minutes.

That’s 1 million more lottery chances for empty cars seconds after a major accident in which one person to a whole family was killed, and after which the illegal alien fled the scene to run back to Mexico until the heat has cooled off.
