As President Donald Trump continues to weigh potential gun reform legislation, at a private fundraiser this week in Palo Alto, the president reassured high-dollar donors that he'll be a champion of the Second Amendment amid bids for a bipartisan compromise.
Trump, who said Thursday that gun control negotiations were moving "very slowly," behind closed doors days earlier reassured a room full of donors that those concerned about second amendment issues "voted for the right president."
The comments came amid a series of California fundraisers the president attend this week, which included stops in Beverly Hills, San Diego and Los Angeles, and kicked off on Tuesday with a plush and private Palo Alto luncheon with a starting ticket price of $1,000 at a secluded mansion of tech giant and Sun Microsystems co-founder Scott McNealy, where he raised $3 million.

Scott McNealy is still a Republican in the Age of Trump. Good for him.
“Trump, who said Thursday that gun control negotiations were moving “very slowly,” behind closed doors days earlier reassured a room full of donors that those concerned about second amendment issues “voted for the right president.”
Negotiations behind closed doors? Smokey back rooms? What is there too negotiate? How to achieve another “bite from the apple” without losing an election?
The voters will determine if they voted for the right president based upon the percieved level of weakness in his backbone. So far I’ve seen no effort on his part to address through repeal the onerous control mechanisms restricting firearm freedom in federal law.
I think the president realizes that genuine interest in gun control just isn’t there. It only spikes after a shooting, and that is a short lived phenomenon. He is running out the clock on them.
CC
But Don does not see how “Universal Background Checks” infringes on 2nd am. Ivanka has her liberal hooks into him.
Then publicize the gun control package you have in congress.
The bumpstock ban is clear evidence he is caving to the created crises.
He always kicks the gun control can down the road, other then the stupid bump stock ban, which he owns 110% . This tactic is why I have not been to worried every time he talks about gun control.

If those negotiations arent something like my idea on gun control is for you all supporting it to ESAD then, no, I probably didnt vote for the right president.
I think DJT is being told, correctly, that signing gun control of any kind is one of the few ways he can lose 2020, but is having a hard time actually believing it.
I want to play with some 2 liter pop bottles on some 22lr rifles.
For my ears...
He’d better protect the Second Amendment or the base may just stay home on Election Day.
I don’t think that the ‘base’ has only one issue.
No, but you have to admit 2A rights are non-negotiable in the defense of our republic. Anyone, and I do mean anyone, who does not support them is a willing or unwilling accomplice to the destruction of our republic.
Take it up with the bear. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Smokey_Bear
The push for more Second Amendment infringements is highest as the Media create a frenzy to push politicians to pass these measures right after some sort of shooting.
If we can delay acting long enough, the issue goes away, as the media cannot keep up the frenzy for long periods.
Anything to delay slowly defuses the media push.
President Trump has used this technique before.
"Let us negotiate"
"We need another meeting."
"What about this point?"
There are a lot of weak sister politicians who are always ready to give in to the latest media push.
President Trump is not one of them.
I think Trump is very talented when it comes to distraction, diversion. deflection. We usually don’t know what he’s up to, until he actually DOES it. (I’m not suggesting ‘10 dimensional chess’ - just native canniness, and a lot of wisdom, backed-up by a lifetime of experience.)
Have a little faith!
I didn’t realize that there was a real ‘Smokey Bear’ associated with the icon - in fact, I probably saw him at some point in my childhood visits to the zoo:

Fine. Here’s a deal we can maybe agree on. We’ll give the Dems two things, and we only get one!
- Bumpstock ban (should get thrown out by SCOTUS anyway)
- Universal Checks: all FFLs are required to provide a free NICS check to anyone.
And we get:
- Repeal of GCA ‘86
