Details lacking: Housing head in LA, addresses homelessness

The Trump administration continued to show an interest in California's homeless crisis Wednesday but offered little in the way of help or specific solutions as the secretary of Housing and Urban Development toured a Skid Row shelter in Los Angeles and called for cooperation among federal, state and local governments.

The visit came as President Donald Trump spent a second day in the state raising money for his re-election campaign, and the day after he once again took a swipe at California's homeless issue. "We can't let Los Angeles, San Francisco and numerous other cities destroy themselves by allowing what's happening," Trump said Tuesday.

He vowed to do something about the problem but only mentioned creating a task force. A delegation of federal officials last week toured shelters, health care facilities and the city's widespread homeless encampments after the president directed them to develop policy options to the national crisis of people living on the streets.

While Trump has smeared Los Angeles, San Francisco and other big cities' homeless woes as disgraceful and faulted the "liberal establishment," the problem is much broader, and courts have limited what cities can do to clean up encampments.

I believe this may turn out to be a mistake for Trump.

Now that Trump has said he's willing to help find a solution to the homeless (a self-inflicted wound by liberals in liberal cities) he risks being held accountable if nothing works out and they will pin this on him.

Trump might just decide to use FEMA, bypass the crooks and clean this up.

It seems like a better plan then sending more money to crooked dem leadership.

I don’t much like the precedence but maybe it’s the better poison.

I don’t recall the AP asking for any “details” about ObamaCare.

Deport the 1.5 Million Illegal Aliens and their offspring in Los Angeles and watch the Housing and Homeless crisis disappear overnight.

O goody.. can’t wait for every responsible taxpayer to fund LAs problem. More government and more government funding is always the right answer.

Helping addicts to perpetuate their lifestyle is a no win situation. The People's Republic of Kommiefornia legalized dope and now they're all flustered by the swarm of addicts into that absolute horror of a state.

And the feds should do nothing to enable their mess. They created it. Let them live in it.

FIX the homeless situation. Turn the empty shopping malls into dormitories. Set up exercise equipment that produces ENERGY...like a renewable source. When a fat, lazy person can turn the wheels on their bicycle generator and produce 10 kilowatt of electricity, they get to go to the cafeteria and get a hamburger and fries. They come back and bike some more. For those who do this at NIGHT when they need MORE electricity, give them a Hamburger, Fries, a Shake, and a Snicker Bar. Test them for drugs, anyone doing drugs goes into a bull pen and starves.

There’s way more than 1.5 million illegals in the LA basin. And a lot of them came here by plane from countries other than Mexico.

I trust Trumps' instincts but I would have preferred he called out the failed liberal policies in liberal-run cities; as he did with Baltimore.

We'll see how it plays out.

Not necessarily - I was in LA recently for a business trip. Hadn't been there in years and years. I don't ever recall seeing tent cities on the sidewalks on previous trips. But there were several and the residents of them were black and white...mostly men. A few black women. I had time to ponder while sitting in traffic - that part hasn't changed. One black woman was screaming obscenities at drivers. And a white guy appeared to be talking to his invisible dog.

I really hate LA.

By the way you can see this type of thing from Seattle to san diego in most major cities. SF is as bad as LA and Sacramento is becoming a hellhole. The thing that bothers me is that taxpayers are not in an uproar and kicking people out of office.

POTUS did. Did you watch the clip rather than regurgitating the AP garbage spin?

He clearly stated that SF and LA homeless problems are the results of bad liberal policies.

BTW, he doesn't need to "offer solutions." Highlighting the problem itself is victory right there, since the liberal media has ignored it until Trump brought it up.

Personally, we should focus solely on homeless veterans. I don't give a damn about homeless illegal aliens, or people who made bad choices and want to ride the system.

the price of housing will go down 80% almost overnight, all those menial jobs that I and my friends ALL DID have been filled by Illegal Alien Adults for 30 years in los angeles and all those businesses deserve to go bankrupt. It will be a Total Blood Bath and the City will come to a screeching halt, and well deserved.

Easy way to solve the homeless problem.
Either remove the illegals from their present housing and turn it over to the homeless, or even better, move all the homeless to all that empty housing in Latin America.

Anyone remember when ‘love of the homeless’ was THE big way liberals virtue signaled each other? Liberals and Hollywood idiots created this mess by incentivizing it... Rather than seeing it as pathological they romanticized it. Now we reap what they sowed...

This is what prevents recoveries in northeastern cities; they may have (like LA) some exclusive areas, but their middle classes have been chased out, and a lot of illegals replaced them. They contribute nothing while consuming much (”free” public education and such), so there is no incentive for normals to move back and pick up the tab for them. There is also no incentive for companies to move in and pick up the tab, either.

The anti-Amazon demonstrations in NYC highlighted this problem perfectly; the gibsmedats didn’t want potential employers (even large ones) offered tax breaks - they wanted to know how much money could be wrung from any company foolish enough to enter their territory (with predictable results).
