Mittens lost the most winnable election in history against the most unpopular president the Republic has ever known.
He lost because the voters saw through him as a jealous and small man.

...and he let up on campaigning at the end while Trump went a 100%. He is a choke artist.
Therefore, when Donald Trump came along and literally cleaned his clock in a very public and humiliating manner, there has been a burning resentment ever since.
It really eats away at Romney that he had a real chance to be president but blew it. Like his father, he will forever be known as the also-ran who never quite was able to get to the top level.
Now Romney realizes that his place in history has permanently been usurped by Trump and he hates Trump for that. So his only recourse is to try and diminish Trump in any way that he can.
In the process, Romney has only diminished himself.
Years ago, I actually had some respect for the man. Now I have none whatsoever.
