It was widely reported earlier this year that the new state budget imposes an additional one percent tax on restaurant meals bringing that total ‘meals tax’ to 7.35%. What you may have missed is that the 7.35% tax will also be imposed on many ready to eat prepared foods at the supermarket that have never been taxed before.
“It is simply a money grab, that’s all it is,” said Senate Minority Leader Sen. Len Fasano (R-North Haven).
Republicans say it was sold to the public as a simple one percent tax hike on restaurant meals.
But the list from the tax department shows dozens and dozens of prepared food items, purchased at the grocery store, that will now be subject to the tax. Like packages 8 ounces or less of spring salad mix, sliced vegetables, sliced watermelon, or potato salad.
Sen. Fasano adding, “If you buy 5 or less rolls or donuts, you will be taxed 7.35%. If you buy 6, no tax.”
Governor Lamont admits, he needed the money to balance his budget but sees this as a fairness issue adding, “I think our restaurants have been at a real disadvantage because people could go to grocery stores and buy the same thing you can get at a restaurant tax free at the grocery store.”
This long list from the state tax department on the items that will now be subject to the ‘Meals Tax’ is considered an “advisory opinion, ” which the Republicans say is likely to cause a great deal of confusion next month.
If "fairness" was the goal, they would eliminate the restaurant tax.
Progressives' idea of "fairness":
John is unfairly taxed, so we'll tax Bill unfairly also, then it will all be "fair".
Pretty soon, Connecticut is going to notice that people can get air tax free by breathing...

News organizations are so clueless. How many local news stations make it clear where they are on their net sites? Few.
On average, how many minutes do you spent on those sites trying to figure out where they are located? What kind of journalism is it where the reader has to find clues on the page and then net search with them to find this out? Asinine.
My HS journalism teacher (1960s) would have given us what for if we wrote like that in her class.
A masters degree in journalism now isn’t even the equivalent of an “A” in my HS journalism class.

I agree. So many posts list the radio/TV station call letters and I’m only familiar with maybe 20 nationwide. Then throw in a reference to “Springfield” or some other common city/town name and often I still have no idea where the news is happening.
Are supermarkets ready to process this tax?
I don’t think that entry was in the keywords when I first looked at the article. I may have overlooked it, but I did look in the keywords to try to find the location identification.
Super post but if “we” have to spend time searching where it’s from, it’s not at all helpful, and I’ve been guilty a time or two over the years!
