While Cruz agreed that background checks need to be improved, he told Guttenberg and Milano that he thinks the most effective solutions focus on the bad guys, such as felons, fugitives and people with serious mental illnesses that are a danger to themselves or others, as opposed to law-abiding citizens.
Throughout the meeting Tuesday, Cruz repeatedly advocated for the 2013 Grassley-Cruz amendment that failed to pass at the time and which he reintroduced this year and repeated a claim that PolitiFact debunked in November 2017, saying that it could have prevented the Sutherland Springs shooting.
The bill would allocate more resources to stopping felons and fugitives from getting firearms and laid out improvements to the federal background check system.

Well, if the all knowing PolitiFact "debunked" it, there is nothing to discuss. That's the end of the debate! smh.
What good are background checks when Eric Holder and Barack Obama forced the illegal sales of firearms to narcoterrorists from Mexico?
Thinking you can “prevent” people from committing crimes is a fool’s errand.
Surprisingly she dressed like a hand maiden.
“...Thinking you can prevent people from committing crimes is a fools errand....”
Absolutely. Says a lot for our moronic politicians, doesn’t it?
The only way to stop a bad guy with a weapon is with a good guy with a weapon. It’s been that way since the beginning of time. No law, old or new, is gonna change that. We have a God-given right to defend ourselves and our families. These azzhats think they’re gonna deprive us of that??
The stream is not getting much play. Not on youtube and very little is written about it.
“The stream is not getting much play. Not on youtube and very little is written about it.”
Cruz must have won.
Gun control - whatever - Cruz was guilty of severe man spread! How ever did that gentle flower of womanhood survive this?!?
Maybe because a mental midget like AM got pawned big time. I know there are a lot of Ted haters here but if he took on leftard professors at Harvard and still passed, then this is nothing..
Why would I be inclined to insult people? I just simply like to clearly and concisely point out with credible evidence about how that great deal of what firearms prohibitionists like Milano say simply is not so.
Always grateful for the opportunity to engage in positive, civil discussion on substantive issues. Todays meeting with @Alyssa_Milano and @fred_guttenberg was productive and respectful, and I appreciate their willingness to come here with an open mind.— Senator Ted Cruz (@SenTedCruz) September 10, 2019
I believe more conversations like this will go a long way in helping unite and heal our divided country.— Senator Ted Cruz (@SenTedCruz) September 10, 2019
We all agree we have far too many of these mass shootings, and they need to stop. It is long past time for everyone to put away the partisan talking points so we can work together to solve this problem. We need to act.— Senator Ted Cruz (@SenTedCruz) September 10, 2019
In Congress, we need to focus on what works. I have offered solutions, including Grassley-Cruz, which would keep guns out of the hands of felons and dangerous individuals and stop mass shootings.— Senator Ted Cruz (@SenTedCruz) September 10, 2019
We could pass these reforms right now and make our country safer. I will continue to work with my colleagues in Congress to do just that.— Senator Ted Cruz (@SenTedCruz) September 10, 2019
But it’s going to be a fool’s errand with teeth in it as Red Flag laws march inexorably forward.
Pre-crime is now part of legal lexicon.
“Citizen, it is known to us that you own guns and that you voted for Trump. We’ll be contacting you shortly.”
Thank you @SenTedCruz for inviting @Alyssa_Milano, @DadoftheDecade and I today. You were gracious with the 90 minutes you took for our very candid conversation. I look forward to continuing with it. https://t.co/YSjP8RPxHj— Fred Guttenberg (@fred_guttenberg) September 10, 2019
Thank you sharing the heartbreaking story of your daughters horrific murder. I hope our positive & respectful conversation helps bridge some of the angry divides in our Nation & we can unite to stop violent gun crime while protecting the constll rights of law-abiding citizens. https://t.co/TTfUB8b4eI— Ted Cruz (@tedcruz) September 10, 2019
I just left. He was gracious. Im unsure if it changes anything. But appreciative for the opportunity to bridge the divide with civil, meaningful, discussion. Link to entire meeting below. #NoRA https://t.co/tAAzPXt5hW— Alyssa Milano (@Alyssa_Milano) September 10, 2019
Milano had a panic attack.
Don't believe gun controllers seeking to be conciliatory or respectful.
Sorry this is boring a hec. Nobody got time to watch this.
His statement is nicer than hers. Hers is a bit tight lipped.
His sounded sincere, actually.
(Not that I am surprised. Cruz does appreciate debate; she is unable to do that because she can never consider anything is even debatable....).
