Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is expected to announce later Tuesday his intention to promote annexation steps in the occupied West Bank if he wins the next week's elections, an Israeli official tells me.
Why it matters: Netanyahu has already spoken about annexation before Israel's elections in April, but he didnt commit or promise anything. Netanyahus statement is directed at his right-wing base and the settler lobby in order to boost support for his Likud party over other right-wing parties, ensuring that Likud wins most seats in the elections to gain an upper hand in building a coalition.
The international community sees the West Bank as Palestinian occupied territory and the Israeli settlements there as illegal.
The Trump administration has changed U.S. policy on the West Bank and while it is not recognized as part of Israel, it is not designated as occupied.
Between the lines: Netanyahu wanted to get some kind of a pre-election gesture from President Trump for example, a statement that would grant support for annexation.
His statement today will put pressure on the White House to respond and say if it supports annexation or not.
The White House has decided to postpone the publication of its Israeli-Palestinian peace plan until after Israel's elections. Netanyahu's statement on annexation is sure to further complicate the White House's plans

Jus do it.
Annexation is good, right? For Israel?
It’s better for the arabs than living under the PLO...
Well you would have all those Palestinians which would suddenly become Israeli citizens. What do you do about them?
The Arabs can have Gaza. That’s it. Even though Gaza’s a total s-hole, it’s still more than they deserve.
That's the dirty little secret they don't want you to know.
I wonder if they will agree.
Might as well
They have to fight for it like they own it anyhow
They wont say it out loud unless they want to die
Depends on what is being annexed. I would imagine Bibi will annex areas with heavy Israeli settlements. If you saw maps of the proposed peace deals that the Palestinians rejected, Israel would have been allowed to annex territory just outside their current borders and the Jordan River Valley bordering Jordan. No way Bibi would annex areas with large Arab populations.
I’m guessing after they see what life is like as part of Israel many will change their lasts names to Silverstein :)
Once they find out that everything they were told were lies and that they are living MUCH better than before they won’t be so concerned with the Palestinian cause anymore.
Lots of arabs in Israel already, no? And they seem to be happy
Gotcha.
It seems though that arabs that live in Israel are pretty happy to be there.
Their lives are a thousand times better than those on the other side.
But they can't say it, publicly, lest they be killed by fellow Arabs.
If they do it?
Fine.
Just don’t make us enforce it all, or pay for any of it.
At all.
There will never be peace in the area as long as Israel and Palestine remain as definable political entities. The core, irreconcilable value of each is a claim for the same land. No real peace is possible. Annexation of the West Bank will further diminish the concept of Palestine. The fantasy of a “two state” solution officially dies with annexation. However there will one day come an Islamic based counterattack to seek redress from their perspective. Given Israel’s current overwhelming military superiority, such an attack that truly threatens Israel’s existence is not likely in the near future. However military superiority is often contingent on the sophistication of weaponry. One day some future technology may even the sides. The question for United States is to what extent will Americans be willing to sacrifice human and materiel treasure to intervene. Best to think about it now and debate.
What a shame.
The Oslo Accords say that Judea-Samaria (not “the West Bank”) is Israel, so it’s not really annexation.
Unless they’re Hanin Zoabi.
