Republicans in Congress have never been good at hiding their intentions to gut Social Security.
In recent years, GOP luminaries from Senate Majority Leader Mich McConnell of Kentucky down through Sen. Marcio Rubio of Florida and former House Speaker Paul Ryan of Wisconsin have talked about the need to slash entitlements because, you know, the cost of programs such as Social Security and Medicare is driving the federal deficit, leaving so little room for tax-cut handouts to the wealthy.
Now Sen. Joni Ernst (R-Iowa) has added her voice to the discussion, with an added fillip. During a town hall appearance in her home state over the weekend, Ernst said members of Congress should hold discussions about Social Security behind closed doors.
Secrecy is essential, she said, so were not being scrutinized by this group or the other, and just have an open and honest conversation about what are some of the ideas that we have for maintaining Social Security in the future.
A video clip of Ernsts appearance was unearthed and published by Democratic operatives. Its proper to note that Ernst doesnt explicitly call for benefit cuts or privatizing Social Security. [ ]
But she gives away the game in other ways. To begin with, the only reason politicians ever take actions behind closed doors is that they know the results will be massively unpopular. Raising taxes on the rich to pay for Social Security benefits? That discussion can be held in the open, because the option is decisively favored in opinion polls. Cut benefits? That needs to be done in secret, because Americans overwhelmingly oppose it.

Why don’t they ever gut Welfare?
How about all the Senators who have talked about confiscating the contents of 401k accounts ‘behind closed doors’ ?
Joni Ernst? Mitt Romney in a pantsuit will never propose reduced spending on anything, ever!
The permanent bureaucracy and progressive nanny-state in Washington DC is “gutting” Social Security just fine on it own.
Journalism.
When you are a total loser and even schools of education refuse you.
Not buying it, Obamaholes.
Usually “gutting” social security headlines turn out to be someone talking about reducing the COLA by a tenth of a percent per year or something.
Not journalism.
Not even close.
Did you mean: obama hopeThat is what good old Google suggests when that term you mentioned is searched for.
The unique factor related to social security is that if you have worked your entire adult life and paid into the system, the first 8 - 10 years of benefit is just getting back the money paid into the system on your behalf. Then the next 3 - 5 years is getting back the increase in value on what you paid in.
Paying disability and drug addict benefits out of the social security funds just complicates the calculation.
‘maintaining’ is a far cry from ‘gutting’
It is the failure of all of us: certainly the ones who invented and imposed this monstrosity upon us, but also the people who forgot that the men in government are not angels and need internal and external controls. . .controls that were never placed upon the SS system. Thus, we get what we deserve just as surely as someone who falls for the latest offer from the Nigerian official who wants to transfer huge sums to your bank account. . .the scamer and scam-ee are both to be blamed.
GOP should let the Dems own social security. It can’t be fixed at this point.
Not buying it, Obamaholes.
What is it youre not buying? He quoted Ernst directly. Did she not say the words he attributed to her?
“Republicans in Congress have never been good at hiding their intentions to gut Social Security.”
The first sentence in a “news” story.
The first sentence in a news story.
Its an opinion column
And hes right. Just before the 2018 election, Mitch McConnell said they had to cut Social Security. A great way to lose the House and turn it over to Trumps tormentors That may have been Mitchs plan
By the way, Trump has said GOP has to stop trying to cut Social Security. He argued against all the othe candidates in the 2016 primaries. And he got booed by the big donors. But he won the votes of blue color democrats. If GOap now insists on cutting social security (behind closed doors or wherever)?theyll go back to losing as they did before Trump
Sabotaging the Republican Party? I think they are intent on destroying it and rebuilding in the image of Romney and his followers.
I never hear discussion about gutting freebies for illegals.
If someone can explain to seniors that they want to raise the retirement age of BABIES BORN TODAY to 75, and then explain the extremely simple math to to senior’s, and then explain to them that THEY WILL BE LONG DEAD BEFORE THIS CHANGE OCCURS, I don’t think this will be political suicide.
But then, I guess, no one will ever go broke underestimating the intelligence of the American people.
