The INDIAN POINT NUCLEAR POWER PLANT, which supplies nearly 25% of New York City’s electricity, Indian Point Unit 2 and Unit 3 are scheduled to shut down by April 30, 2020 and April 30, 2021 respectively, as part of an agreement reached with New York State in January 2017 ( Yep, that’s Gov. Andrew Cuomo for you ).

I still have not read or heard what they plan to replace it with.

We have the technology to create really safe nuclear power plants that are essentially meltdown-proof, use cheap thorium-232 as the nuclear fuel, and generate a tiny fraction of the radioactive waste of today’s power plants. Perfect that technology and in combination with solar and wind power at the appropriate locations around the world, we could completely phase out the use of even natural gas by 2050.

I'm disappointed that molten-salt reactors haven't been developed on a commercial scale. These "pocket reactors" use thorium and nuclear waste from fission reactors, tend to be much, much smaller in scale, and don't suffer from the "China syndrome" when things go wrong. Instead of one huge power plant and a forest of overhead wires, a molten-salt reactor would service a small town or a large neighborhood.

But then again, I'm not personally concerned: my power comes from a geothermal plant with solar "kicker".

Nuclear power has the smallest eco footprint, even though plants are required to have way more land then they need.

Wind farms and solar panel farms have the largest eco footprints.

Nuclear runs 24/7/365 for YEARS. (40-60 year lifespan)

Windmills run only when the wind blows. (20-25 year lifespan)

Environmentalist should LOVE nuclear.
