Detectives and a medical examiner found Whisenant had shot himself in the head, Hollywood police said.
Police searched for two blocks north and south of the crime scene but couldn’t find the gun or any other weapon....

Perhaps he shot himself in the head, and as it failed to do the job intended, he walked to the beach to drown himself. There, standing in the sand, he died of fright upon seeing a shark swim by.
The story makes as much sense as the ‘official tale’.
