It is news, but given the fact that he was upfront on his time commitment, not much of an issue. He'll have served longer than he committed to and is staying till the release of the plan.

My read on it is that among the many deadly faults with Oslo, they made a tactical and PR error in keeping the dealings a secret. It served both sides at the time, but when the deal was scuttled at the last minute by Arafat he was able to save face because nobody knew what he turned down.

This time, I think, the offer will be public. That will put the onus on the Palestinian leadership and the Palestinian people to accept or reject publicly. Sure, they will negotiate - but the broad terms of the initial proposal will be known to the world. If they walk away, they have to justify what is to follow. And it is likely to be followed by a big shrug if they don’t come to terms - which is bad for the Palestinians because this is their opportunity to tell the world they are more interested in peace and prosperity than continued hostility.

Doing it in the open takes the spin out of it. It puts everyone on notice and takes the wool off the wolves’ faces. You can’t really continue to justify an “I hate Israel” line when Israel openly supports a proposal to Palestinian sovereignty that pours scores of billions of dollars into their economy.

Thanks for your analysis.

Lets discuss it further when the details come out.

I am trying not to get my hopes up too much, but I really do think that they will try a new approach, and that circumstances are very different now with the Gulf Arabs who have the big money on the other side.

New leadership in Saudi Arabia, Iran is a bigger issue for them, and oil economy prospects are dramatically shifting to US advantage each year. They could benefit in diversifying their economies with Israeli know how and joint ventures.

Yes, of course there will be a lot more to discuss when more info is available. I agree, there will be different approaches and over the years a lot of proposals have come out including the possibility of leasing a large swath of land in the Sinai peninsula which would annex to Gaza and alleviate the overcrowding in that strip.

Interesting side note is that Egypt and Saudi Arabia had a long standing dispute over some islands in the Red Sea, and Egypt recently agreed to relinquish their claims in return for a couple billion dollars. You could read that optimistically in that Egypt might be willing to work some kind of land deal; the Sinai is largely uninhabited.

Maybe Egypt would administer Gaza. We could set up a big free trade zone on the Mediterranean.

Palestinians are well educated and could be an asset to the Egyptian economy, if not for the radical politics.

Saudi Arabia too.
