California becomes the first state to ban fur trapping

California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) signed a measure Wednesday making the state the first to ban fur trapping, according to the Los Angeles Times.

The Wildlife Protection Act bars commercial or recreational trapping on both private and public land, according to the Times.

The commercial trapping industry shaped the early economy of California and the American West in general but has played an increasingly smaller role over the decades.

“It seems especially cruel, obviously, and it’s just unnecessary and costly,” said Assemblywoman Lorena Gonzalez (D), who introduced the bill. She added that the roughly 70 trappers who continue to work in the state, compared to thousands a century ago, cannot afford the cost of regulating the industry, according to the Times.

California Department of Fish and Wildlife data indicates 68 trappers killed 1,568 animals throughout the state in 2017, including coyotes, badgers, minks, gray foxes and beavers. To avoid damaging the furs, these animals were strangled, shot or beaten to death.

Despite the decline in trapping in the state, outrage at the practice has been widespread since 2013, when conservationist Tom O’Key came upon a bobcat trap illegally set on his land, according to the Times.

“I could not have guessed in a million years that trap would spark an unstoppable movement capable of shifting legislative thinking toward wildlife,” O’Key told the newspaper. The incident also led to the Bobcat Protection Act of 2013 and a 3-2 vote by the California Fish and Game Commission to ban commercial bobcat trapping.

A few of my favorite shows involves Alaska and trapping: Mountain Men, Life Below Zero, Last Alaskans, Yukon Men...

The Left is insane and completely divorced from nature. They can “hunt” for the perfect latte or “stalk” the freshest kale bunch, but wouldn’t last five minutes alone in the Artic.

Next: The Beaver population skyrockets and lays waste to their forests.
Which may solve their forest fire problems. Hmm...

I do not think this means what they think it means. Protect the beavers indeed. This is a far cry from normative practice in the anything goes state.

Their marxist media bias is showing. Writing the headline to say “California becomes the first state...” implies they are on the long march of history. Had they said, “California becomes the only state...” it would ave been both accurate and without bias.

Trappers don’t generally make costs and hats from mouse and rat fur. That would seem like a lot of effort.

If you are living in the mountains of northern CA, far from anyone else...on your own property...I doubt very much if the traps in use yesterday won’t be in use tomorrow.

Maybe. The trouble is selling them. If all they’re doing is making their own coats and hats; fine. But selling gives nosy government officials a looksee.

I can imagine they’ll set up some kind of new, expensive law enforcement branch, decked out in all the latest SWAT gear, to keep their eyes on these last 68 ex-trappers.

The violent take downs of the trapper filth will be featured on NatGeo’s “Wild Justice”.

Forget California’s rampant drug abuse, homelessness, illegal immigrant, gang activity, unaffordable housing. Let’s focus on the 0.01% of the citizen’s legally trapping wild game.

Every leftist politician and bureaucrat in California should be introduced to a rope and a lamppost.

I bet you this nimrod’s will change his tune after Muffy gets dragged into a dark corner by some bob cat.

I’m sure that bobcat isn’t going to go vegan just for this idiot. He should be nice and put out a salt lick to aid in the bob cats digestion.

I've got a place in SW Wisconsin about 25 mile N of Prairie du Chien. There is a reenacted Rendezvous every year with all of the activities that took place during the originals.

This area is called the "driftless area", and is unlike just about any other area in the world.

Anyway, the Rendezvous is, as you say yours is, not to be missed.

This Rendezvous reenacts those that took place in the mid 1600's.

Lot of history.

I do recall that years ago being "overserved" in some of the public houses was a problem.

You might be joking but half of them absolutely want to.

The other half want to ban everything that isn't debasing and degenerate.
