MIAMI (CBSMiami/CNN) Power crews are rolling into Daytona International Speedway ahead of Hurricane Dorian.
Those crews, made up of 18,000 people from 34 states and Canada, are staging getting ready to restore power after this storm.
This is one of the processing centers where they come in, they get their assignments they go through a safety training and then we preposition them in 20 staging sites that weve established in the east coast of Florida. What that does is that it puts us in the position so that they are able to hit the ground running and they are able to restore power to our customers as soon as the storm passes, said Florida Power and Light spokesman Dave McDermitt.
**SNIP**
After the storm they do have an order of priority when it comes to power restoration. It starts with health care facilities, like hospitals, and public safety facilities and then they move on to the residential neighborhoods.

After Katrina, it was so cool to see the mile long convoys of utility trucks heading down I-55 and US 49 in Mississippi
Obertime city.
I bought some small cap stocks that do utility work in the southeast and mid atlantic on Wednesday, I think.
They got a little bounce, though I don’t like to make money off the misery of others.
One got a Staggering bounce and I had bought options in it but I don’t want to recommend it because I feel it will go right back down by end of upcoming week.
Before every major storm, especially the hurricanes, I see two things happening on the highway.
1. Steady flow of traffic headed north trying to get out of the path of the storm. Almost 100% of the vehicles have out-of-state license plates.
2. Steady flow of power trucks with apple-pickers headed south to get to the heart of the storm. They're arriving to restore power after the storm passes. They come from all over the country, not just the east and midwest. I saw an Arizona crew go by yesterday.
This same phenomenon occurs every single time a major storm is forecast to hit the state.
I wish the storm would hurry up. It’s all that’s on the TV.
LOL, my PR friend complained that this was not done for PR. Like I told him, the USA bridge and tunnels were damaged by the storm and Trump couldn’t get there within a couple of days until they were repaired. Now I do have to give credit to who ever got the PPPPPP right.
My parents ran a restaurant when a hurricane hit here many years ago. They had the foresight to get the restaurant cleaned and patched up before the power came on so when it did they were ready to open. Reps from the utility companies came by and told my parents to have their employees sign their checks and someone would come by every and write them a check.. My parents made a killing; they didnt gouge, the guys just ate incredible amounts of food.
Convoy of Hope headed your way. Utility trucks as well. Not sure where they are staging. Stay safe...
Awesome! The ones who come down and give of themselves do pretty well financially, but you need opportunity spend it. Your parents were brilliant.
Worth every penny.
Thousands of utility workers counting huge overtime and expense reports while their home areas will have to go with longer service times.
“Thousands of utility workers counting huge overtime and expense reports while their home areas will have to go with longer service times.”
OK, fair enough. What exactly is your proposed response to an incoming hurricane? Want to pay for your utility to quadruple their permanent workforce for a once-every 5 years- storm? Maybe a new Federal Agency? Or pick up some Mexicans at the 7-11? Let’s hear your proposal.
Plenty of linemen from Alaska head south for the winter, to work on these storms.
My cousin lives west of Mobile and he is just waiting for the call. He says they will stage in Orlando.
My buddy and I went South with a Chipper,Chainsaws and “supplies” and made a killing. We are Army vets who were able to pull our “vet cards” literally and figuratively in many cases.
Seriously ? :-\
Duke energy has one of these staging areas close to me.
. ...this is cool to see government agencies or quasi government agencies co operating and planning ahead and doing something SMART for a change!
