Trump eyes mental institutions as answer to gun violence
AP vis MSN ^ | 8/30/19 | Kevin Freking

When shots rang out last year at a high school in Parkland, Florida, leaving 17 people dead, President Donald Trump quickly turned his thoughts to creating more mental institutions.

When back-to-back mass shootings in Dayton, Ohio, and El Paso, Texas, jolted the nation earlier this month, Trump again spoke of "building new facilities" for the mentally ill as a way to reduce mass shootings.

"We don't have those institutions anymore and people can't get proper care," Trump lamented at a New Hampshire campaign rally not long after the latest shootings.

Now, in response to Trump's concerns, White House staff members are looking for ways to incorporate the president's desire for more institutions into a long list of other measures aimed at reducing gun violence.

It's not absurd the idea that mental institutions would have done anything to prevent the mass shootings we've had that concerns me. It's the "long list of other measures" that the staff is supposedly working on that I'm leery of.

In my opinion, human violence is a spiritual issue combined with an inability to control or diffuse negative emotion more than it is a mental issue.

Trump has to be careful NOT to set up a situation where evil ‘liberals’ can use institutions to imprison political opponents.

And that's exactly what they would do if given half a chance. Liberal filth is already pushing the ‘white people are terrorists lie’... so this has to be air tight. NO POLITICAL prisoners.

It's the best solution short of "Establishing a Religion".

Because, returning to God is the only real answer.

If someone is too unstable to have a firearm then he/she is also too unstable to live unsupervised in society. All 50 states have detailed, and long established, procedures to admit a person to a psychiatric facility against his/her will.

I worked in a big city ER for years. I've seen it done dozens, and dozens, and dozens of times.

IOW,no new laws are needed.

I do believe this also.

The thought of mental institutions equals more people on meds that will turn them into zombies and when they are out on their own and stop taking their meds, than what?

No new laws are needed,
More facilities are.
Most of the time that dangerous persons are released, it’s because there’s no space.

People need the freedom to get away with doing something crazy once. Sad but necessary. It’s not like the one free grope.

The collapse of the American family and the absence of strong, involved, biological fathers living in the home is the #1 cause. The bull elephant must guide & instruct the juveniles...and sit on them occasionally. Problem #2 is the removal of Judeo-Christian religious practice from homes, schools, and myriad other private & public institutions. Problem #3 is the Leftist indoctrination industry that masquerades as public education. Problem #4 are the violent messages with which youth are bombarded incessantly via TV, films, video games, the Internet, and social media.

Build all the mental hospitals, ban all the guns — won’t make a particle of difference in mass shootings or overall crime. Our culture is rotten, and society is sick. Fix those first.

In high school, our rifle team brought their weapons to class on practice and competition days. The rifles in their cases were too big to fit in school lockers. Almost every boy had a substantial pocket knife on his person, and many who drove to school had weapons in their cars/trucks (and Confederate battle flags proudly displayed). No violence using these items *ever* occurred. An occasional fistfight was the extent. Now, tell me what’s different today.

I absolutely agree. More state-run facilities are needed...and quickly. Most “commercial” group homes that I have investigated are worse than nothing.

How to best treat it? Dunno. Since they closed down the mental institutions, it does appear to be on the rise.

Comments BUMP!

In simple terms I believe it's referred to as: "The breakdown of civility"

Yes, there is the whole problem of using pills to address problems of this nature, but also in exposing such people to lunatic psychiatrists. Not really sure I trust them.

Yes, they did.

And now our young people don’t know the difference between right and wrong and Good and Evil.

You left out the damage done by drugs...prescribed and street drugs. And the irreversible damage done to the in vitro brain by the drug/alcohol addict mother.

Cause it would address the cause of all violence.

Take the gun away from a crazy person and he’ll come back with a knife.

My understanding is that almost in every mass shooting case, the shooter was or is on SSRIs or other psychotropic medication. Plus, they’re all Democrats.
