Inside a small brick building in downtown Austin, these are some of the comments in a guest book at a new exhibit called "War Remains," an interactive virtual reality taste of World War I:

“I have been trying to imagine this all my life — I finally have.”

“I have never been in combat and I am more certain than ever that I don’t want to be. What an amazing and terrifying experience.”

The experience is based upon research into different battlefields in the First World War, explains legendary war storyteller Dan Carlin, a podcaster renowned for his Hardcore History series.

The US was completely suckered into WWI.

America had NO interest in it.

“But Muh Lusitania..!”

Lemme tell you, they WANTED that to happen, it was Gulf of Tonkin, with rag-time dancers.

WE KEEP GETTING SUCKERED.

We should fight our OWN wars.

I’ve never been in the military, much less combat, but I would imagine that the meat grinder style of trench warfare that was the hallmark of World War I had to be the most insidious and deeply disturbing style of fighting ever.

A visit to the National WWI Museum and Memorial in Kansas City is a real learning experience.

On the other hand, WWI allowed the US to commingle troops all over the country in concentrations and nurture the H1N1 Influenza virus that mutated and grew in the central US. The concentration of troops allowed the US to infect many and then export it to the world and kill more people than the war ever did. That virus did more to facilitate the end of the war as did the negotiations and German surrender.

Technically, the causus belli was “unrestricted submarine warfare.”

And if you’d like a warm up for WWI, you might check out the anime “The Saga of Tanya the Evil”, aka “Youjo Senki”, which is a treat if you like military history and culture.
