Democrats see golden opportunity to take Georgia Senate seat
The Hill ^ | August 29, 2019 | ORDAIN CARNEY

Democrats are feeling bullish about their chances to win a Senate seat in Georgia in the wake of GOP Sen. Johnny Isakson’s decision to retire.

The announcement, Democrats argue, gives them a golden opportunity to expand the Senate battleground map heading into 2020 and chip away at the GOP’s Senate firewall.

Nikema Williams, the chair of the Democratic Party of Georgia, immediately pledged that the state would be a must-watch “battleground” in 2020, saying in the wake of Isakson’s announcement that it “has never been clearer that the path for Democratic victory runs through Georgia.”

Georgia has typically been a safe Republican state, but Democrats made gains in the House races in 2018 when Rep. Lucy McBath (D) defeated GOP Rep. Karen Handel in the state’s sixth congressional district. The party also came close to winning the governorship when Stacey Abrams lost in a close race to Republican Gov. Brian Kemp.

Other planets may also be aligning for Democrats in Georgia.

The party believes the state’s demographics are moving in its direction, and President Trump’s low approval ratings have Democrats thinking he may leave other Republicans vulnerable.

Trump defeated Democratic Hillary Clinton by 5 percentage points in 2016, but only won a little more than 50 percent of the vote. That’s given Democrats new hope of winning the state in the presidential race.

Even if that dream doesn’t come true for the party, Democrats like their chances of winning the open Senate seat in a year when Trump will be at the top of the ticket and Georgia Republicans will also be defending GOP Sen. David Perdue’s seat.

J.B. Poersch — the president of the Senate Majority PAC, an outside group aligned with Senate Democrats — said the open Senate race “increases our chances of retaking the majority.”

Agree. Handel, like Barbara Comstock in VA, or Mike Coffman in CO, or the lady who ran for Enema’s seat in AZ were just flat-out bad candidates.

Isackson has Parkinson’s and missed the Gorsuch hearings due to health. It was thought he would quit after 2022 anyway.

It appears that the GOP is losing a lot of congressmen in safe districts; and now a senator in a relatively safe state. But 2020 is going to be a real test for the national GOP to find, then support, the right candidates.

I’m told John James, as good a personal candidate as he is, has a bad campaign team.

McSally revamped her campaign team, but so far-—except for some badly needed joint appearances with Ward-—has not demonstrated any improvement.

Unless the vote fraud stops, the Dems will shortly own this country. On Tuesday, there was a special ‘election’ on whether or not to stop wasting money by extending Light Rail in the Phoenix area. It was overwhelmingly voted down. Lefties want to continue pouring money down the rabbit hole in the name of Environmentalism. Ridership of the Light Rail system already in place is low. But the Maricopa County Recorder is a flaming Lefty. So the Dems will be getting anything/everything they want as he is the one ‘counting the votes’. This doesn’t bode well for the 2020 election.

Translation: They think they can “find” enough votes in ballot boxes in the trunk of some DemocRats’ car to steal the election.

There seems to be some confusion on this thread regarding the Governor filling Isakson's seat.

Per the AJC:

That’s funny! She won’t be able to wait to get started...

Um I believe our Republican governor Brian Kemp will be appointing a Republican to serve out the rest of Isaksons term. Which will be an immediate improvement as Isakson is an undocumented Democrat.

Re: Nice if somebody who is politically savvy in this area put some real information up on this thread. What is the real situation?

The real situation is the same in every state - basic demographics.

Eligible voters in Georgia are about 60% white and 40% non-white.

White Georgia voters vote 70% Republican.

Non-white Georgia voters vote 80% Democrat.

If white and non-white voters turn out at the same rate, that puts every state wide election right at 50-50.

Are there any good GOP Reps in Congress that could step in? Doug Collins is the first one that comes to mind.

Don’t think GA is under any threat.

Presidential year, Trump on the ballot, I don’t care how “close” they got in 18... Other than this state probably requiring more funds because the dems think they have a shot, I am hard pressed to see either of these Senate seats going blue.

Remember, the whole “Hillary is up 10 in GA” nonsense?

I read last night on FR that the Republican governor appoints someone to fill the remainder of Isaakson’s term which expires in 2022

That information is incorrect. Georgia law states:

Any vacancy occurring in the representation of the state in the Senate of the United States shall be filled for the unexpired term by the vote of the electors of the state at a special election to be held at the time of the next November election, occurring at least 40 days after the occurrence of such vacancy. Until such time as the vacancy shall be filled by an election, the Governor may make a temporary appointment to fill the vacancy.

O.C.G.A. § 21-2-542

In this case, the special election will occur in Nov, 2020 for the remaining two years of the six year term. The Governor will appoint a replacement for the period from 1 Jan 2020 until the General election.

Herman Cain
Matt Guertler
Doug Collins

More likely it will be some RINO like our former governor Nathan Deal.

Roy Moore only proved that the combined force of Republican back stabbers with the Democrat media weapon is sufficient to destroy a Republican candidate through lies.

After Brett Kavanaugh made many people realize that Democrat women who come forward and claim sexual encounters are more often than not just lying kooks, this same tactic may not work for the Democrats and Republican backstabbers again.

“What is the real situation?”

Isaakson’s Parkinson’s has gotten worse and he just had a tumor removed from a kidney ... new baby, eight other gorgeous children and a gorgeous wife ... he wants to spend his very few good remaining years with them ...

I do not trust the GOP at any level to help President Trump. My opinion is that they rolled over in the last election. I have no reason to believe that the GOP will put much effort into winning anything and we will be lucky if we just hold ground.

“McSally revamped her campaign team, but so far-—except for some badly needed joint appearances with Ward-—has not demonstrated any improvement.”

McSally is such a turd as a candidate! But she may have a chance against Mr “Gun Grabbing” Gabby Giffords, aka mark Kelly. Of course, she actually needs to RUN. In ARIZONA. And that fact may escape her...

She was a turd in a flight suit, too. According to every A-10 pilot I’ve met.
